ROCHESTER, Mich. - Oakland Women's Soccer and new Head Coach Devin Zvosec announced their first new signing of the summer as they welcome defender Mia Tuka as the newest member of the Golden Grizzlies.
Tuka reunites with Zvosec after playing under him at James Madison University as a redshirt freshman in 2023. Tuka helped a stout defensive line as a member of the Dukes, boosting a team that gave up only 19 goals in 22 games during the 2023 season.Â
The soon to be redshirt sophomore has a long track record of success over her playing career. Last season with Tuka on the roster, JMU broke off a streak of ten games without a loss, lasting from Sep. 7 to Oct. 19. Over the streak the Dukes shutout eight opponents and allowed just two goals. In the same season, the team reached the Sun Belt Conference Championship Game, as well as the program's first NCAA Tournament appearance since 2015.
A native of Broomfield, Colo.,Tuka also led her team at Broomfield High School to multiple state championships, graduating as a two-time state champ, winning the title in 2019 and 2021 while earning the State Cup Player of the Tournament in 2021.
At 5'9, Tuka brings the much needed element of size to the Golden Grizzlies, and with great ball skills and pursuit ability she looks to make a splash on an already solid Oakland defense that didn't allow more than one goal in 10 of their final 11 games last season.
"I'm absolutely delighted to welcome Mia Tuka to our team. With her impressive background as a student-athlete, including valuable experience as a NCAA Tournament participant and Sun-Belt Conference Tournament Finalist, she brings a lot of value to our roster," said Zvosec. "She comes from a high-performance environment at James Madison University, and embodies a competitive mindset that will undoubtedly help elevate our team's performance. I can't wait to see her contribute to our defensive unit and help us achieve success in the upcoming season."
This is just the beginning of a promising present and future for Oakland Women's Soccer as they move forward under new leadership.
