PITTSBURGH, Pa. - The Golden Grizzlies historic postseason run came to a close as it fell to the N.C. State Wolfpack in overtime, 79-73, tonight in the second round of the NCAA Tournament inside the PPG Paints Arena.
The Golden Grizzlies (24-12, 15-5 HL) were led by
Trey Townsend who tallied 30 points off 11 makes from the floor (.444) with 13 boards, as
Jack Gohlke hit six from range to total 16 in the tournament to set the record for most threes ever made by a player in their first two career NCAA Tournament games.
The Wolfpack (24-14, 9-11 ACC) saw DJ Burns Jr. record a double-double as he led the team with 24 points and only missed three shots (.750). Mohamed Diarra also recorded a double-double as he brought down 13 boards to go along with his 11 points.
The Wolfpack jumped out to an early lead, off a trio of two's along with a three, as
Chris Conway was the only Golden Grizzly to get on the board in the opening five minutes.
 Gohlke picked up where he left off as he drilled his first shot of the day, from range, off a side-step jumper to make it 9-7, Wolfpack. N.C. State proceeded on an 8-2 run to nearly extend its lead to double-digits, but
Blake Lampman drilled back-to-back threes, with a Wolfpack two inbetween, to make it 20-15.
The Wolfpack put itself ahead, 26-17, with 7:45 to go in the opening frame, but a hookshot from Conway, followed by Gohlke's second three of the evening, cut it to a four-point game. N.C. State struggled down the stretch as it went scoreless for 4:20 of play as Oakland cut it to one. The Wolfpack ended its drought with two-straight makes, but
Rocket Watts cut the lead to three going into the break at the buzzer to make it 32-29.
The ball was spread out well for the Golden Grizzlies as five players tacked on points, as Gohlke led the way with a trio of three for his nine. The Wolfpack outshot the Golden Grizzlies slightly, at a .412 clip opposed to Oakland's .387 clip, as the Golden Grizzlies made two more threes than the Wolfpack. The difference maker of the first 20 was off the glass as N.C. State had 11 more boards at 25.
The Wolfpack went ahead by seven, but
 Townsend drove hard into the net and drew a foul while his basket dropped to complete the three-point play. Gohlke hit his fourth three of the night off a fast break to cut the teams deficit to two, as
DQ Cole came up with an offensive board and fed it to an open Townsend under the hoop to knot things up at 42.
The Wolfpack tallied three to put itself ahead, but Conway hit his third three of his career to square things away at 45. However, the Wolfpack scored six quick points off back-to-back threes in :39 seconds to go ahead by six. It was Townsend's time from beyond the arc as he drilled on as the game's last 12 points were from deep. The Wolfpack extended its lead to six, but Gohlke hit another from range and drew a foul to complete the four-point play to make it 56-54 with 6:17 to play.
Time was winding down as Oakland found itself down five with under five to play after a three, but Townsend answered as he made his second three of the night, good for just his third time this season making two or more threes in a game. After two from the charity stripe from the Wolfpack, Gohlke got the ball in his hands as he hit another from deep to make it a one-point game, as the Golden Grizzlies got its first lead of the game right after on a three-point play from Townsend.
N.C. State made it a one-point game with one make from the line and had the ball with 1:17 to play. The Wolfpack retook a two-point lead on a three-point play, but Gohlke hit two from the charity stripe to tie things up at 66 with :41 seconds to go. Both teams had one last chance to go ahead before the final buzzer, but 40 minutes wasn't enough as the game was knotted at 66 apiece as the clock read zero.
Townsend got the first points of extra time as he made one from the line, but N.C. State answered with a two to go ahead. The Golden Grizzlies got back ahead with two free points as Townsend hit both from the line. The game continued back-and-forth as the Wolfpack regained the lead with a tick under two to go and grew it to three with 1:33 to play.
The Wolfpack hit a three to go ahead five and followed it up with two from the line to go ahead seven with :31 seconds to play. The Golden Grizzlies had one final effort to claw back but the lead was too great, as the Wolfpack closed the game out and won, 79-73.
In the second half and extra time, the Wolfpack held an edge over the Golden Grizzlies as Oakland only made one of nine shot attempts in extra time while N.C. State made four. The Wolfpack also outrebounded the Golden Grizzlies in overtime, 8-4, as it brought down 12 more in total. Overall, Oakland shot 25-of-68 (.368) from the floor with 12 makes from range, as N.C. State shot 29-of-64 (.453) from the field with nine makes from deep.
