Golden Grizzlies Drop First Two Games of Indiana Invite

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - The Golden Grizzlies record now sits right at .500 after dropping their first two games of the Indiana Invite.

Game 1 vs Indiana

Both starting pitchers brought the heat in this game to start. Sydney Campell got the nod for the Golden Grizzlies and was on fire, retiring the first six batters she faced, up until she gave up a walk to start the bottom of the third inning.

For the Hoosiers, Brianna Copeland got the nod. After Jen Krizka and Maggie Murphy singled in the top of the first inning, Copeland retired her next eight batters.

Krizka knocked in another single in the top of the fourth inning, already securing her seventh multi-hit game of the season and leading off the stanza with some momentum for Oakland. Kamryn Troyer followed with a sacrifice bunt to move Krizka to second base, putting Oakland in a prime position to open the scoring with two outs.

The Golden Grizzlies would pop up for the final out of the inning as Indiana escaped the Oakland threat to score and kept the game knotted at zero headed into the bottom of the fourth inning.

In the bottom of the fourth Indiana officially broke up Campbell's not-hit bid as Copeland swatted a leadoff single to left field. With scoring on both teams' minds, the Hossiers played it risky and tried to steal second, but Krizka threw a beam from behind the plate as Maci Brown applied the tag.

Still in the bottom of the fourth, the Hoosiers still threatened to put runs on the board, singling once again and using a HBP to put runners on first and second with one out. After Campbell tossed a crucial strikeout to move the game to two outs, Sarah Stone delivered a big double to left field, bringing both base runners home and putting Indiana up 2-0. Campbell ended the inning with her second strikeout of the frame, holding the Hoosiers to the two run lead.

Indiana looked to up the deficit in the bottom of the fifth, after a one-out single and a wild-pitch. With runners on second and third with one out, Campbell did what she does best, forcing the Hoosiers into a ground out to end the inning and keep the score unmoved at 2-0.

Oakland once again stepped up to the plate, looking to start a rally. Reese Ruhlman was walked with one out and advanced to second on a wild pitch, but a strikeout and fly out ended the top of the sixth for Oakland, giving them just one more chance to bat and erase the Hoosiers lead.

In the bottom of the sixth, the Hoosiers extended their lead as Kinsey Mitchell singled, bringing home a run to put Indiana up 3-0. The Golden Grizzlies used an unassisted double play at first by Leah Bieniewicz to end the inning, bringing Oakland back to the plate for what could be their final three outs to make a comeback.

After a two-out Taylor Carraway single in the top of the seventh, the final Oakland batter struck out, ending the game as Oakland fell to Indiana 3-0.
Neither team's bats were flashy in this one. Oakland finished with four hits, two from Krizka and one each from Carraway and Murphy, while Indiana only registered six hits. The Hoosiers' hits just came in succession and at pivotal moments.

Game 2 vs Dayton

The Golden Grizzlies returned to action for day 2 of the Indiana Invite, facing the University of Dayton on Sunday.

After 2 scoreless innings from both sides, Allisa DiPrima battled through a long at-bat and reached base on a walk, giving Oakland some slight momentum. Reese Ruhlman followed with a one-out single, advancing DiPrima to second base.

Jen Krizka pulled through with an RBI single to left field, moving Ruhlman to second base and scoring DiPrima to get the Golden Grizzlies on the board with a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the third.

In the top of the fourth Oakland would have a costly error on a one-out play to first base, resulting in Dayton unloading up the bases after three walks and scoring three runs to take a 3-1 lead and shift the course of the game.

Dayton kept it going in the top of the sixth inning, scoring seven runs in the inning to make it 10-1. Madi Herrington delivered a two-out triple in the bottom of the sixth inning, looking to keep Oakland's rally hopes alive, but nothing materialized as a fly out to left field ended the game.

The Golden Grizzlies cycled through three pitchers on the day, giving up nine hits and ten walks. While given the loss, Alyssa Balcom provided an overall steady performance in the circle, allowing only one hit and striking out two batters in 3.1 innings pitched, with all three of her runs allowed coming as a result of the fielding error and the walks that put them on base.

Oakland looks to end the weekend on a positive note, facing both Indiana and Dayton once more tomorrow in the final games of the Invite.
