Big Weekend at the Plate for Krizka helps Oakland go 4-1 to Finish Cougar Classic

CHARLESTON, S.C. - The Golden Grizzlies closed out their Cougar Classic run with a pair of victories as they finish their opening classic of the season.

Game 3 vs Princeton

Oakland started Day two of the Cougar Classic with a matchup against the Princeton Tigers.

In the first inning, Maci Brown got it started with a single to the left side. After an error was made by the Tigers, Reese Ruhlman reached first base, advancing Brown to second base. Troyer battled at the plate to get a walk, moving Brown to third base, and Ruhlman to second base.

Despite Oakland's best efforts, three runners were left stranded on base in the top of the first as they remained scoreless.

After a back-and-forth battle through three more scoreless innings, the Tigers struck first with a two-run home run to take a 2-0 lead. The two-score blast was the only points manufactured by either team for the rest of the game as Oakland fell 0-2 to the Tigers.

Sydney Campbell received her first loss of the season, despite giving up only three hits in six innings in the circle. The bats for Oakland cooled down after a hot day one of the Classic, going for only two hits in the game

Game 4 vs Charleston

The Golden Grizzlies stepped back onto the diamond for their second face-off with host team Charleston.

Freshman pitcher Alyssa Balcom got her first start in the circle, and through the first two innings, she pitched a gem, allowing no runs or hits.

In the bottom of the third inning the bats started booming for both teams. Charleston hit two back-to-back singles to get their day rolling at the plate. After a wild pitch moved them into scoring position, a sacrifice pop fly scored a run for the Cougars making it a 0-1 game.

The Golden Grizzlies started to heat up the fourth inning. Taylor Carraway started off with a walk then advanced to second base on a wild pitch. Jenna Johnston hit a single up the middle, advancing Carraway, and stole second base to put runners on second and third for the Golden Grizzlies.

Madi Herrington loaded the bases after a walk, where next up Maci Brown reached base on a fielder's choice, advancing to second base, moving Herrington to third base, and scoring 2 runs to give Oakland a  2-1 lead.

Oakland kept applying pressure, as Reese Ruhlman hit sacrifice fly to center field, bringing Herrington across the plate and moved Brown to third base with the score now 3-1. Jen Krizka kept the rally going with a single to center field, scoring Brown to make the score 4-1 as the Golden Grizzlies capped of a four-run fourth inning.

The Cougars struck back briefly in the bottom of the fifth with a solo home run in the bottom of the fifth.

Oakland answered back with another four-run inning in the top of the sixth as Herrington kicked off the inning with a single to center field. Brown reached first on another fielder's choice, advancing Herrington to second base.

Ruhlman benefited from a HBP, loading the bases. Krizka continued to be on fire with a 2 RBI single to left field, scoring two more runs and putting Ruhlman at third base.

Maggie Murphy kept the bats hot with a double as well, also scoring two runs to extend the lead to 8-2.

After holding the Cougars to a scoreless bottom of the sixth, Oakland pushed the pedal to the metal and sealed the game in the top of the seventh inning as Brooklyn Wyczalek hit single, followed by Kayla Rodriguez reaching base with a fielder's choice.

Allisa DiPrima walked and moved Rodriguez over to second base and with another walk to put Alexia Grammatico on first to move everyone over and load the bases.

Claire Loveland joined the party, hitting a single and scoring two runs to make it 10-2 in favor of Oakland.

The Cougars had some fight left in the bottom of the seventh inning, scoring three runs, but it wasn't enough to beat the Golden Grizzlies. Oakland beat Charleston for the second time in two days, winning 10-5.

Krizka went a flawless 3-3 from the plate knocking through three RBIs as well. Loveland and Murphy also ended with two RBIs a-piece as Oakland improved to 3-1 on the weekend.

Game 5 vs Charleston (2/26)

The Golden Grizzlies finished their weekend classic off with their third and final showdown with The Charleston Cougars.

Brown led off the game reaching base on an error by Charleston, setting up a Krizka single and Murphy reaching base on another fielding error by the Cougars, bringing Brown home for an early 1-0 lead for Oakland. Troyer reached base on a fielder's choice, eventually stealing second before being stranded on base to change the side.

Looking to avoid a sweep, the Cougars flashed their bats at the bottom of the first inning. After a leadoff walk, the Cougars hit a double to tie the game at 1-1. Charleston followed with three singles, racking up three more runs to take a 4-1 lead. Mia Konyvka forced a groundout to second base, stopping the onslaught and moving into the second inning.

Oakland quickly made an effort to rally, starting with a single by Leah Bieniewicz and a one-out single by Plitz to put runners on first and second. A Brown groundout advanced the runners to second and third, setting up Ruhlman for a big at-bat.

Ruhlman reached second on Charleston's third error of the game, bringing both base-runners around to score and bring Oakland within one run, down 3-4.

With Ruhlman on second, Krizka continued her hot start to the season, swiping a single up the middle, putting runners at the corners with two outs.

Oakland was unable to manufacture the game-tying run, grounding out to third to end Oakland's offensive side of the inning.

After a scoreless third inning on both sides, the Golden Grizzlies reactivated in the top of the fourth. Alexia Grammatico led off the inning with a single, followed by Plitz reaching first base on a fielder's choice. Grammatico was thrown out at second base, but a Brown single put runners on first and third. Krizka pulled through with her second hit of the day, notching career RBI 101 as a single to center field put Oakland ahead 5-4.

Murphy joined in on the party at the plate, sliding a single through the left side, scoring Krozka and putting Oakland up 6-4.

Konyvka found her flow on the mound, pitching a one-two-three bottom of the fourth, keeping Charleston at bay and keeping them scoreless in the next two innings.

Mary Newton stepped in and kept the pressure on from inside the circle, pitching a scoreless final two innings as the Golden Grizzlies swept Charleston and leave the Cougar Classic with a 4-1 record.

Oakland heads slightly north to take of North Carolina in Chapel Hill, N.C. on Wednesday, Feb. 28 at 4 p.m.
