Golden Grizzlies Bats go Cold as they Fall in Chapel Hill

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - The Golden Grizzlies continued their Road trip to the Carolinas with a game against the streaking Tar Heels.

After a quiet top of the first for Oakland, the Tar Heels scored first in the game as a two-out single brought a runner home, giving North Carolina a 0-1 lead.

Both teams remained quiet at the plate through the next couple of innings as Sydney and Campbell and North Carolina's Kenna Raye Dark continued to duel.

The Golden Grizzlies had their best chance to score in the top of the fourth, where singles from Reese Ruhlman, Jen Krizka, and Kamryn Troyer loaded the bases with one out for Oakland. Madi Herrington flew out in the infield for out number two, and Taylor Carraway struck out looking to flip the sides as Oakland left the bases loaded, coming out of the inning without a run scored.

Another chance would arise for Oakland in the top of the sixth with the game winding down to its last six outs for the Golden Grizzlies. Krizka hit a one-out single up the middle for her second hit of the game, starting the inning off well for Oakland. Maggie Murphy followed with a double to center field. On the play Krizka was waved around third and sent home where she was called out in a close play at the plate.

The Golden Grizzlies flew out to end the inning, leaving another runner on base as they still trailed 0-1 in the middle of the sixth inning.

With one final half-inning to make a rally, Jenna Johnston knocked a single to first base, putting a runner on for Oakland to comeback. The final two Oakland batters struck out to end the game as Oakland fell 0-1 in a heart-breaking loss in Chapel Hill.

Krizka went 2-3 from the plate, earning her fifth multi-hit game of the season. Campbell pitched another solid game, giving up just the one run and six hits. In her two losses this season, Campbell has only allowed a combined three runs.

A rare occurrence where the Oakland bats struggled to get going, the Golden Grizzlies have a quick turnaround as they take on Coastal Carolina tomorrow, Feb. 29, at 3 p.m.
