Women's Basketball Looks to Stay Flawless in League Play with Busy Slate of Games

ROCHESTER, Mich. - Now with only in-conference games from here on out, the Golden Grizzlies look to solidify themselves as a contender in the Horizon League with matchups against Northern Kentucky, Cleveland State, and Purdue Fort Wayne on the slate for the upcoming week.

Oakland comes into these matchups as one of just four Horizon League teams with an undefeated league record, standing 2-0 thus far.

Against fellow Horizon League teams, Oakland is one of the top offensive squads in the conference, ranking fourth in points per game (69.5), and third in field goal percentage (.451) and three point percentage (.394). Along with their red hot offense, their trademark defense has been forcing turnovers at a league-best rate of 20.5 opponent turnovers per game, while holding opposing teams in check from beyond the arc, allowing them to shoot just over .250 from three.

SUNDAY, DEC. 29 @ NORTHERN KENTUCKY | 1 PM | ESPN+

The Norse and the Golden Grizzlies will face off for the first time since the first round of the Horizon League Championship during the 2023-24 season, where NKU pulled out a 70-62 win to advance.

The two teams are known to play in close contested battles, with five of their last six face-offs being decided by eight points or less.

Oakland has struggled in Highland Heights historically with a 2-6 record all time at Truist Arena, but now lead guard Maddy Skorupksi is known to play at a high level against the Norse, going for 16 points and five rebounds the last time the Golden Grizzlies visited the Norse.

The Norse come into this matchup with Oakland just 3-10 (0-2 HL) on the season and still searching for their first conference win.

They are led by graduate student Halle Idowu and senior Macey Blevins, who both average 12 points per game. Both players are a threat to catch fire from three, as Idowu is shooting nearly .430 from range, and Blevins at a respectable .367.

FRIDAY, JAN. 3 VS CLEVELAND STATE | 7 PM | ESPN+

The Golden Grizzlies will gear up for one of their toughest tasks of the season as they host the Vikings.

This will be Oakland's first game back on the Blacktop in nearly a month to kick off the new year.

Oakland has a tough history against Cleveland State, and will be searching for their first win in the matchup since 2017.

As the top ranked team in the conference, the Vikings rank first in field goal percentage (.494) and opponent field goal percentage (.338).

They have a deep roster of players who can be dangerous at all levels, including two of the top five scorers in the conference in Mickayla Perdue (20.4 ppg) and Jordana Reisma (14.9 ppg).

The guard tandem of Perdue and Destiny Leo will be an exciting one to go against Oakland's dynamic guards of Skorupski, who ranks fourth in points per game (16.1) and Dani Grim who is a defensive menace to opposing guards.

SUNDAY, JAN. 5 VS PURDUE FORT WAYNE | 2 PM | ESPN+

Oakland will play their second home game in just three days as they take on the Mastodons.

One of the other 2-0 teams in league play, the matchup with PFW will be a contrast in styles. PFW fires away from deep, having taken nearly 100 more threes than any other Horizon League team (131) coming into the week, while leading in three point percentage (.384) and overall scoring (79.5 ppg).

Sharpshooter Lauren Ross is the head of the snake for PFW. She ranks second in scoring (19.2 ppg) and field goal percentage (.510) while also leading the league in three point percentage (.522) on over 90 attempts from deep.

With Oakland's tight defense from beyond the arc, they matchup well with a Mastodons team who shoots in high volumes.
