Golden Grizzlies Fall in Overtime Against Beavers, 80-74

HONOLULU, Hawaii - The Golden Grizzlies fell to the Beavers, 80-74, in overtime tonight in the semifinal round of the Hawaiian Airlines Diamond Head Classic inside SimpliFi Arena at Stan Sheriff Center.

The Golden Grizzlies (4-8, 1-2 HL) saw Allen Mukeba go a perfect 10-of-10 from the floor for 21 points which makes him just the third player in Golden Grizzly history to shoot perfect from the field with 10 or more attempts. Behind him was Malcolm Christie who tallied 18, followed up by Buru Naivalurua who recorded his third double-double of the season with 14 points and 12 boards.

The Oregon State Beavers (10-2, 0-0 WCC) had four players tally double-digit points, as Liutauras Lelevicius led the team with 17 points and brought down nine rebounds, also a team lead.

Oakland started the game off hot as it scored the game's first six points coming off the hand of a trio of Golden Grizzlies. The Beavers finally got on the board, but Oakland quickly grew its lead to seven on three separate occasions as Mukeba made it 13-6 with 14:17 to go, good for his sixth point early. The Beavers went on a quick run and knotted things up at 19 with 8:35 to go, and eventually took its first lead of the game with 6:26 to go off a three.

Another three grew the lead to four, but a pair of Christie free throws made it a two-point game with just under five to play. As time was winding down, the Beavers stayed ahead with a short lead before Mukeba evened things with :49 seconds to go with a layup. The Beavers, however, sank a three with :33 to go to put itself back ahead. Oakland regained possession and called a timeout to draw up a play for Christie who hit from downtown with :18 seconds to go. Now tied at 34, the Beavers threw up one final shot but missed as Oakland headed into the locker room tied with Oregon State, 34-34.

As a team, the Golden Grizzlies were better from the floor than the Beavers, as Oakland hit at a .448 mark (13-of-29) as Oregon State shot at a .419 clip (13-of-31). The Beavers made a trio of more threes than the Golden Grizzlies with five, as Oregon State held the edge at the glass with 19 compared to Oakland's 17. Mukeba was the only player by either side to get in the double-digits, as he was a perfect 5-of-5 from the floor with 10 points.

The teams traded points to open up the second half before Oakland regained control with a Christie three and raced to a quick 7-0 run, with a dunk by both Mukeba and Naivalurua, to take a six-points lead with 14:38 to play. The Beavers threatened the Golden Grizzlies lead as it cut it to a single point on a few occasions, but Oakland's offense came through.

A speedy five points from Oakland with under eight minutes to go built the team's lead to eight, at 63-55, before a two from Oregon State put the lead to seven with 5:29 to go. Oakland looked to build a comfortable lead as a pair of Naivalurua makes from the charity stripe was followed up by a Christie three for the first double-digit lead of the night. However, back-to-back threes and a second-chance lay-in from the Beavers quickly made it 68-64 with 3:14 to go.

The Beavers defense was stout towards the tail end of the game as Oakland had good looks at the net, but couldn't find one to go in. The Beavers used its momentum to claw back and make it a three-points game with :51 seconds to go. A miss gave Oregon State the ball back as it drew the foul while its shot dropped, followed by a made free throw, to tie things with :12 seconds to go. Oakland had one final chance to end things in regulation but couldn't convert as overtime was needed to crown a winner of the semifinal.

Isaiah Jones made a free throw and was followed up by a nice touch at the rim by brother Jaylen Jones to take a three-point lead early in extra time. A pair of Beaver free throws pushed the Golden Grizzlies lead to one before Oregon State regained possession following an offensive foul. With the shot clock expiring, the Beavers chucked up a three and regained control from an offensive board, but Mukeba swatted it away while J. Jones picked up the loose ball.

However, the Beavers took its first lead of extra time with 1:32 to go, and extended its lead to three with a pullup jumper with :44 seconds to go. Oakland put up a three with :39 seconds to go and missed, but came away with the offensive board to give itself another chance to even things up. The Golden Grizzlies couldn't find one to go through though as a few free throws from the Beavers sealed the game as Oakland lost in overtime, 80-74.

Oakland still outshot Oregon State from the floor, shooting at a .464 clip (26-of-56) compared to the Beavers .424 mark (28-of-66). Off the glass, the Beavers held the edge with five more rebounds than the Golden Grizzlies with 39, as Oregon State made 11 shots from range compared to Oakland's five.
