Grim's Big Fourth Quarter Not Enough as Women's Basketball Falls in Bloomington

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - The Golden Grizzlies winning streak would stop at two as they fell short in their final non-conference game of the season.

The Golden Grizzlies started off strong on offense, staying close to the Hoosiers as Lianna Baxter knocked in an early triple, putting Oakland behind 7-8 with 6:40 left in the first quarter.

Macy Smith would continue a hot start for the Golden Grizzlies, draining a triple for her seventh points of the game as Oakland took a 12-10 lead with just over four minutes left in the quarter.

Oakland played efficient, secure, basketball to open the game, making four of their first nine shots while not committing a turnover for the first seven minutes.

Indiana would tighten their defense to close the quarter, forcing Oakland to miss their final five shots of the frame, as the Hoosiers took a 17-14 lead at the conclusion of the opening frame.

After one, Smith led all scorers with nine points as she carried the offensive load for the Golden Grizzlies who shot .310 (4-of-13 FG) from the floor in the quarter.

Indiana would create some separation with a 9-0 run midway through the second quarter, capped off by back-to-back Lily Meister layups as the Hoosiers led 32-19 with 3:36 remaining in the half.

Grim and Kylie Buckley would slow the Indiana momentum with scores on consecutive possessions to cut into the Hoosier lead, but Indiana would shoot 7-13 (.538 FG%) in the second quarter to take a 27-35 lead going into halftime.

The Golden Grizzlies actually improved on the offensive end throughout the half, going from .308 (4-of-13 FG) shooting in the first quarter to .375 (6-of-16 FG) in the second. Oakland's Smith and Indiana's Shay Ciezki would be tied for the game-high in points (9) after the first half, while Grim and Baxter both added five points each as well in the first two quarters.

Despite allowing a big second quarter by Indiana, Oakland was still able to play true to their brand, hard on defense and scoring off turnovers, as they scored 11 points off seven Hoosier turnovers in the first half.

After a 2-8 shooting first half, Oakland's leading scorer on the season Maddy Skorupski made an effort to find her rhythm in the second half, drilling a midrange jumper in the opening minute of the first quarter.

The Hoosiers would immediately respond with an 11-0 run, as Sydney Parish and Ciezki nailed back-to-back threes to put Indiana up 48-29 with 6:54 left in the third quarter.

Skorupski would end what turned into a 19-0 Indiana run with back-to-back buckets, including an and-one layup as the Golden Grizzlies trailed 34-56 with 3:53 left in the third quarter.

Behind a 10-13 (.769 FG) shooting quarter Indiana took a 65-40 lead into the fourth quarter.

Grim opened up the fourth quarter with urgency for the Golden Grizzlies, scoring eight points in the quarter's opening two minutes as she reached 15 points in the game.

Despite an explosive quarter by Grim, Oakland would fall 55-90 on the road.

The Golden Grizzlies would end the game with three double-digit scorers as Grim finished with 16 (6-of-11 FG), boosted by an eight-point fourth quarter, while Smith finished with 12 (5-of-5 FT), and Skorupski with 11 points.

Oakland returns to league play as they take on Northern Kentucky on Dec. 29 in Highland Heights.
