Women's Basketball Starts 2-0 in League Play as they Squeak Out Win over RMU

MOON TOWNSHIP, Pa. - The Golden Grizzlies continued to roll in Horizon League competition, storming into Moon Township to take a nail-biter of a win over Robert Morris.

The Colonials came out of the gate with a tough defensive mindset, making Oakland work for quality looks as Oakland started the game just 1-4 from the field, as Lianna Baxter scored Oakland's first bucket in her first start of the season.

The Golden Grizzlies would get into a good rhythm after trailing 6-2 early, using fast and crisp ball movement to spark an 8-2 run, as Maddy Skorupski scored five points over the run to put Oakland in the lead10-8 with 3:13 left in the first.

Oakland's defense would continue to shine throughout the first quarter, holding RMU to 4-17 (.235 FG%) shooting and five turnovers as a low-scoring quarter saw the Golden Grizzlies finish on top 10-8.

The teams began the second frame with much higher offensive paces, trading buckets as Oakland's Dani Grim started the quarter with a corner triple.

The Golden Grizzlies attacked the paint, taking and making four early free throws in the period as Macy Smith and Madison Royal-Davis earned trips to the charity stripe.

Skorupski dished out her third assist of the game as she weaved around the defense, finding Kylie Buckley for a crafty layup as Oakland took their largest lead of the game to that point as they led 21-16 with 5:40 left in the quarter.

With the game remaining neck-and-neck, the Colonials dominated the paint, pulling to within one point of Oakland as Givon Noa laid the ball in to make the score 22-23, notching RMU's 16th points in the paint to Oakland's four.

As the half drew to a close, Givon nailed RMU's first triple of the game with eight second remaining to give the Colonials a 27-25 lead going into halftime.

Both teams drastically improved their shooting in the second quarter, shaking off some early offensive woes, with Oakland going 5-12 (.417 FG%) and RMU going 7-12 (.583 FG%).

Turnovers riddled both teams at half, especially the Colonials as Oakland forced them into 10 turnovers in the first 20 minutes, using active hands and ball pressure to force hesitation in decisions by RMU.

Skorupski led the Golden Grizzlies with nine points, two steals, and three assists in the first half, missing just one shot going 4-5 from the floor.

On the other side Givon led the Colonials charge with 11 points.

The Golden Grizzlies quickly took back the lead to start the second half as Baxter drained a top of the key triple to put Oakland up 28-27.

Oakland would continue to thrive, going on a 7-2 run to add to their hot start to the half as a Grim layup extended the Golden Grizzlies lead to three points as they led 32-29 with 6:03 left in the quarter.

After starting the quarter 5-7 from the field (.714), Oakland was finding gaps in the RMU defense and getting to the basket, converting on looks in close.

Even with a hot start to the quarter, Oakland wasn't able to create too much separation from the Colonials as Danielle Vuletich scored all eight of RMU's points in the quarter, reaching 14 on the night, as Oakland led by just one point at 36-35 with 4:25 left in the quarter.

Vuletich would continue to heat up, scoring an and-one layup and converting the free throw to give RMU back the lead at 41-36 with 3:32 left in the quarter as the Colonials went on an 8-0 run.

Skorupski would break what was a 12-0 RMU lead with a much needed corner three. Madison Royal-Davis would play the passing lanes for a steal and a score to end the quarter for Oakland, closing the quarter on a 5-0 run and cutting what was a nine point lead by RMU to just four as Oakland trailed 45-41 at the end of the third quarter.

Oakland held the Colonials scoreless for the final minute and a half of the third period, helping Oakland outshoot RMU in the quarter, going 7-14 (.500) to RMU's 6-13 (.462) in the frame.

After a pair of turnovers to start the fourth quarter, Oakland settled in once again as Skorupski earned steal number five of the night, leading to a transition score, followed by Sereniti Roberts-Adams' second bucket of the quarter as Oakland took their first lead since midway through the second quarter, now leading 47-46 with just over six minutes remaining.

The teams would continue to trade as the game winded down, taking turns tying the game as both teams stayed within one possession of each other.

After a made RMU free throw pulled RMU to within one, Grim would net a jumper and a free throw on consecutive possessions to put the Golden Grizzlies up 55-51 with 1:10 remaining.

Oakland would hang on to their lead, earning a 55-53 win on the road.

Skorupski led the charge once again for the Golden Grizzlies with a game-high 19 points (8-of-16 FG), five steals, four assists, and four rebounds.

Grim also had an impactful game, scoring eight points (1-of-2 3FG) and a season-high six steals.
The Golden Grizzlies start league play with a 2-0 record for the first time since the 2016-17 season.

Their next opponent will come from the Big Ten as they face Indiana for one final non-conference opponent of the season, on Sunday in Bloomington at noon.
