BOISE, Idaho - A pair of Golden Grizzlies tallied double-digit points as Oakland fell to Boise State, 87-43, tonight inside the ExtraMile Arena.
The Golden Grizzlies (1-1, 0-0 HL) were led by both
Buru Naivalurua and
Allen Mukeba who tallied 10 points each, while
Jayson Woodrich led off the glass with seven rebounds.
The Broncos (1-0, 0-0 MWC) saw four players in the double-digits, as O'mar Stanley shot 6-of-7 from the field for his 15 points and eight boards.
The Broncos jumped to a quick 10-point lead in the opening minutes of the half, as it hit a pair of threes and a pair of points in the paint, before Woodrich pulled up for a two to put the Golden Grizzlies on the board. Boise State kept up though with its third three of the night in as many attempts. Mukeba muscled his way for two and sprinted to the other end of the court to contest a layup from the Broncos as Oakland trailed, 13-4, with 16:29 to play.
The Broncos continued to roll as it built its lead up to 15 with 12:44 to go before
Jaylen Jones hit a jumper from the paint for his first of the game. Both teams played a stout defense towards the midway point of the game, as each side went over two minutes each without having scored a point. Both teams, however, ended its droughts as Boise State drove in for a layup, and Woodrich drilled Oaklands first three of the contest.
The Golden Grizzlies continued to attack but a strong Boise State offense remained steady, answering every Oakland make, as it built its lead up to its largest of the half at 30. The 30-point lead went into the locker room as Oakland trailed at the break, 48-18.
Mukeba led the Golden Grizzlies at the half with six points, as he was 3-of-6 from the field, while Woodrich led off the glass with four. As a team, Oakland shot at a .226 clip (7-of-31) from the floor with one made three, while the Broncos made six of its 10 shots from range and shot 19-of-35 (.543) from the field. Off the glass, Boise State held the edge with 23 compared to Oakland's 16.
Oakland opened up the half with intensity as it rattled off nine points just 2:29 into the half. Boise State built its lead to 30+ as Oakland continued to try and chip away at the lead to attempt a comeback. The Golden Grizzlies offense was more effective in the second half with more answers, but the Broncos kept up the pace and continued to make shots.
The Golden Grizzlies bested its 18 first half points as Mukeba scored the team's 19th of the half, and his 10th of the game, with a driving layup. The Broncos intensity continued throughout the remainder of the half as the Golden Grizzlies saw its deficit grow to as much as 44 before the final buzzer, as Oakland fell, 87-43.
Oakland improved from the floor in the second half, shooting 11-of-35 (.314) with a pair of makes from range. In total, Oakland shot at a .273 clip from the field while Boise State went 33-of-62 (.532) with nine makes from three. Boise State kept up with its boards from the first half as it ended the game with 14 more than Oakland with 45, despite the Golden Grizzlies having one more offensive board.
The Golden Grizzlies stay on the road as it heads to Champaign, Ill., to face off against the University of Illinois.
