Men's Soccer Finishes Regular Season with Dominant Win over Titans for Fifth Straight Victory

DETROIT, Mich. - The Golden Grizzlies extended a pair of streaks, closing the regular season with five straight victories and making it 14 consecutive matches in the Metro Series that they have avoided a loss as they beat Detroit Mercy 3-1 in the season finale.

As the match began, the Titans tested Oakland keeper Alex Flowers early, putting three shots on goal in the opening 12 minutes, but the freshly named All-Academic Team member keeper was up for the task, making three top notch saves as the game remained even at 0-0 in the early going behind some great play in goal.

Oakland broke the silence in the 21st minute as Jack Klomparens notched his fourth goal on the season with a one-touch volley into the back of the net to put the Golden Grizzlies up 1-0 just under midway through the first half.

Oakland kept the pressure on, scoring another goal less than ten minutes later as Julian Kanzler found Milan Dajic for a wide open goal to bolster the first half lead to 2-0.

Oakland was extremely efficient in the first half, taking three shots and putting all of them on goal. Even while trailing, Detroit had the volume advantage, taking seven shots and putting four on target.

The Titans came out of the half with urgency, pushing the pace of the game while Oakland tried to slow the pace.

Detroit would score a big goal in the 50th minute as they strung together several passes, ending with a strike by Guershom Sylvain to cut the Oakland lead in half at 2-1 with nearly a whole half left to play.

The Titans continued to test the Oakland defense, down a man due to a first half red card to Luke Benford. Detroit put two hard-hit shots on goal after their score, but still anchored down in the net was Flowers as he raised his save count to six on the day.

Despite Detroit controlling possession for much of the second half, the Golden Grizzlies handled the pressure and took advantage of the Titans' aggressiveness as Andrew Darakdjian capitalized on a counter-attack, taking an assist from Andriy Bilous and finding the back of the net for his second goal of the season and the dagger as the Golden Grizzlies took a 3-1 lead with just 15 minutes remaining.

The game took on a physical tone down the stretch of the match, and by the full 90 minutes the squads combined for 30 fouls (15 each) and a pair of red cards, one on each side.

It seemed as though the Titans once again would sway the momentum with last minute heroics to strike back once again in the 78th minute, but the goal was overturned and ruled offsides, all but puting Detroit's victory hopes to bed as Oakland held on to secure a 3-1 victory.

This game marked the third time this season the Golden Grizzlies have scored three goals in a match, the second time in the last three games.

Oakland will take a little over a week to rest, securing a bye in the Horizon League Championship, before playing in the first semifinal game of the championship on Nov. 14 at 1 p.m.
