Women's Basketball Prepares for Regular Season Openers

ROCHESTER, Mich. - Women's basketball prepares for the official beginning of their regular season as they head to Michigan State to take on the Spartans to start the week, before playing in their home opener against Cleary on Friday.

In their only preseason game, the Golden Grizzlies dominated against the Rochester Christian Warriors, shooting .467 from the field (35-of-75) while having four players score in double-figures, including a game-high 26 points (10-of-15 FG) from Maddy Skorupski, to go along with seven rebounds and nine assists.

Dani Grim (15 pts), Madison Royal-Davis (10 pts), and Lianna Baxter (10 pts) all joined in on the scoring. Oakland also dominated defensively, holding the Warriors to .333 shooting (22-of-33 FG) and forcing 19 turnovers.

The Spartans have high hopes for the season, after finishing fourth in the Big Ten last season, they are projected to make a big jump in 2024-25 after landing several game-changing transfers to their roster.

They return team-leading scorer Julia Ayrault, who averaged 15.4 ppg in 2023-24. They also acquired Grace VanSlooten, who averaged 15 ppg for Oregon last season.

The Golden Grizzlies will be looking for their first ever win against the Spartans in this upcoming game.

Oakland's Skorupski will make her second appearance back at the Breslin Center, after transferring to Oakland after her freshman season as a Spartan. In l
ast season's matchup Skorupski scored 14 points (6-of-11 FG) to go along with four rebounds and four assists against MSU.

Oakland will play its home opener against the Cleary Cougars on Friday as part of our Kid's Day Event. 

The team's played their first ever matchup last season, leading to a 110-51 victory by the Golden Grizzlies on their home court. In the game a whopping eight Oakland players scored in double digits, including a game-high 17 points (7-of-11 FG), seven rebounds, and four steals from Madison Royal-Davis. Jasmine Dupree-Hebert also scored a career-high 15 points (5-of-8 3FG).

Oakland is looking to repeat a performance where they shot nearly .500 from the field, scoring 56 points off of 38 Cleary turnovers.
