Women's Basketball Drops Game One in Daytona

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. - The Golden Grizzlies were unable to overcome a three-point flurry from Richmond as they started out their trip to Daytona with a loss.

The Spiders put defensive pressure on the Golden Grizzlies immediately, forcing five Oakland turnovers in the first five minutes as they held a 10-6 lead early.

Kylie Buckley got off to a quick start for Oakland, shouldering the early offensive load by contributing to all six of the Golden Grizzlies' first points, scoring four points and throwing one assist in the opening five minutes.

With both teams struggling offensively, Madison Royal-Davis would break an over three-minute field goal drought by both teams with an and-one layup with 1:08 left in the first. Oakland would close out the quarter on a 5-0 run, finished off by a Jasmine-Dupree Hebert triple with 21 seconds left, as Oakland clawed their way into the lead 13-11 at the end of the first quarter.

Oakland's defense stayed steady in the first, holding Richmond to just 4-16 (.250) from the field.

The Spiders regained the lead swiftly to start the second quarter, as Rachel Ulstrom nailed back-to-back threes as part of an 8-0 Richmond run as they went up 19-13 with just over two minutes passed in the quarter.

Macy Smith scored her first points of the night with a midrange jumper to stop the Richmond run, but Ulstrom continued to set the court ablaze as she drained two more threes as she tallied four triples in the quarter, to put the Spiders up double-digits 25-15 with 5:51 left in the first half.

Richmond would continue to score exclusively from beyond the arc, draining five consecutive threes, another four from Ulstrom, as the Spiders lead ballooned to 34-15 with 3:34 left in the first half.

Oakland would go into the locker room trailing 41-19, as the teams spent the second quarter on opposite ends of the spectrum offensively. The Golden Grizzlies were cold from the field, going just 3-11 (.273) while the Spiders used seven threes in the quarter alone from Ulstrom as the team went 8-10 (.800) from deep and 11-17 (.647) overall in the second quarter.

Royal-Davis led the way with five points (2-of-2 FG) for Oakland, while Ulstrom tallied 24 (8-of-11 3FG) for Richmond.

The Golden Grizzlies saw most of their production come from the bench as they led 10-5 in bench points, while also leading 12-10 in points in the paint.

More of the same persisted as the third quarter began, as the Spiders sparked a 12-0 run to go up 53-21.

Smith would drain her first shot from deep on the night with 4:14 left in the quarter, halting a Richmond run that had spread to 16-0.
The Smith score sparked Oakland's best run since the first quarter, as the Golden Grizzlies went on a 6-0 run, finalized by Royal-Davis' second and-one layup of the game.

Grim would hit a jump shot in the quarter's final minute, as Oakland trailed 60-29 at the end of the third quarter.

The Golden Grizzlies were able to hold Richmond to just three makes from beyond the arc in the quarter (3-of-7 3FG), but Oakland continued to stay cold from the field as they shot 4-16 from the field in the third frame.

Oakland jumped out the final quarter with the most aggression they had all game, going 5-7 from the field to start as they tallied 13 points in the quarter, already tied for their most of any previous quarter in the game.

Over the hot start to the fourth Smith (6 pts) and Lianna Baxter (8 points) took over offensively.

The Golden Grizzlies would go on to have their best quarter offensively, going 8-14 (.571) from the field to score 20 points, but it wasn't enough to overcome the deficit as they fell 76-49.

The three point barrage from Richmond was their best all season as they went 15-36 (.417) from deep, including 11 triples from Ulstrom, the most threes in a single game by any player in the nation this season, as she finished with 35 points.

Smith scored a game-high for Oakland with 12 points, while adding three assists to her tally, while Baxter earned her second-consecutive double-digit scoring game as she earned 10 points (4-of-6 FG).

Oakland looks to have a short memory as they play their second and final game of the Daytona Beach Coast 2 Coast Classic tomorrow at 3:30 p.m.
