Women's Basketball Unable to Triumph over Monarchs to Close Daytona Beach Classic

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. - The Golden Grizzlies closed out their time at Daytona Beach as they clashed with Old Dominion in the Coast 2 Coast Classic Finale.

After trailing 6-2 to start the game, Dani Grim helped Oakland tie the game with back-to-back buckets as she tallied an early four points, pulling the game to a 6-6 tie just under halfway through the first quarter.

The Golden Grizzlies would jump in front after the media timeout as Lianna Baxter laid in a deuce as Oakland led 8-7 with 4:36 left in the frame.

Baxter's score was just the start, as Oakland broke out a 10-2 run, which was finished off by a Baxter triple, as Oakland led 16-9 as the quarter winded down.

Oakland was able to shake off a frigid shooting game the day before as they went 8-13 (.620) from the field in the first quarter as they led 18-12. The defense held the Monarchs to .310 (5-of-16 FG).

Maddy Skorupski and Baxter both tallied five points in the quarter, shooting a combined 4-of-5.

Right out the jump in the second quarter, Grim continued to be the offensive spark plug for Oakland, scoring on back-to-back possessions and knocking down a three as Oakland's lead tallied seven points (25-18) and as she reached a game-high nine points.

Old Dominion began to regain their momentum on offense, scoring four of their five field goals outside of the media timeout, pulling to within one possession (26-28) after a Brenda Fontana layup with 4:25 left in the half.

Despite a field goal drought from Oakland as they didn't make a bucket for the final five minutes of the quarter, they were able to get to the free throw line to manufacture points, going 5-of-6 from the charity stripe as they led 32-29 going into halftime.

Even with a cold close to the half, Oakland's .480 shooting from the floor (12-of-25 FG) bested the Monarchs' .390 shooting (13-of-33 FG).

Although Oakland trailed in paint scoring (16-to-24) through the first 20 minutes, they were converting a high percentage of their chances down low, going 7-11 on layups in the half.

The Monarchs quickly jumped back into the lead, scoring three quick buckets to start the third to take a one point, 35-34 lead, sparking an 8-0 run to go up 41-34 on the Golden Grizzlies.

With the lead in danger of growing to double-digits, Skorupski scored five consecutive points to cut the deficit back to a possession at 39-41 with 4:56 left in the third.

Both teams would struggle to find the bottom of the net at the end of the quarter, both going on over three minute scoring droughts as Old Dominion led 48-44 heading into the final quarter.

At the end of the quarter, both teams were even in shooting percentage (.410).

With some final quarter heroics needed for the Golden Grizzlies, they would spark a 6-0 run to tie the game at 50 after a Buckley free throw with 5:07 left.

A 5-0 stint by the Monarchs would increase the Old Dominion lead back to five points (50-55) as time continued to work against Oakland.

Skorupski would hit a late three to pull the Golden Grizzlies to within six, but it was too little to late as the Monarchs escaped with a 56-64 victory.

Skorupski finished the game with a team-high 17 points (7-of-13 FG) and four assists, while Baxter finished with 10 points, six rebounds, and three blocks, while Grim added 11 points (5-of-8 FG) as well.

Oakland was able to hold Old Dominion to just two made threes (2-of-15 3 FG), but the Monarchs dominated the paint, outscoring Oakland 44-22 in paint points.

The Golden Grizzlies will return home to play their first in-conference opponent in Wright State on Dec. 6 at 7 p.m.
