Career-Highs from Baxter and Skorupski lift Golden Grizzlies over CMU

MT. PLEASANT, Mich. - The Golden Grizzlies saw several big-time performances as they broke a three-game losing skid with a much-needed win against Central Michigan.

Oakland started the game fast, after a CMU score to start the game the Golden Grizzlies cranked off a 7-0 run, capped off by a Kylie Buckley hook shot to go up 7-2 with just over three minutes taken off the clock.

After the Chippewas pulled closer, Oakland stretched the lead to double-digits with a 9-2 run late as Buckley hit a big three as the Golden Grizzlies went up 23-13 with 58 second left in the opening quarter.

CMU rattled off five unanswered points to close the quarter as Oakland led 23-18 after the first ten minutes.

The Golden Grizzlies shot one of their most efficient quarters of the season, going 10-15 from the field (.667 FG%) while nailing a trio of triples (3-of-5 3FG). Their early lead was sparked by great ball movement and pace, earning seven assists on 10 made field goals, while getting six steals on the defensive end as well.

Oakland's defense continued to clamp down on the CMU offense in the second quarter, forcing the Chippewas to miss all of their first nine field goal attempts, helping the Golden Grizzlies go on a 6-1 run, finished off by a Maddy Skorupski layup to balloon the lead back to double digits (29-19) with 5:51 left in the first half.

The Chippewas would make their first field goal of the quarter with 4:41 as Lisa Tesson hit her first three of the game to trim the Oakland lead back to single digits as the score read 27-22.

CMU would gain back some momentum at the end of the half, using a 9-0 run to close out the second quarter and leave the game tied at 32 apiece at halftime.

Both teams struggled in the second quarter, going a combined 7-34 (.205 FG%) in the frame.

Oakland led the way in field goals (13-to-12) while shooting a superior .419 to CMU's .353 field goal percentage, but CMU dominated the boards, specifically offensive, snagging 27 boards to Oakland's 19 for 11 second chance points.

Buckley (3-7 FG) and Skorupski (4-8 FG) both amassed nine points in the first 20 minutes for Oakland, while Dani Grim had an impactful half despite not scoring, with four rebounds, three assists, and a steal.

After the teams traded buckets to open the second half, CMU scored back-to-back buckets to take a 34-39 lead just two minutes into the half.

Skorupski continued to impose her will, cutting the CMU lead to three points (36-39) after a steal, a career-high sixth of the game, and a fastbreak layup score with 6:31 left in the quarter. Baxter would tie the game at 39 with a putback bucket with 5:17 remaining in the third.

It would be Baxter who would reclaim the lead for Oakland, scoring her second-straight bucket as Oakland led 42-41 with 4:06 left in the third quarter.

The teams would trade buckets down the stretch of the third quarter as Buckley put in a layup with 30 seconds left to give Oakland a 52-51 lead going into the final frame.

Baxter had a huge quarter for the Golden Grizzlies, scoring nine third quarter points as she now tallied 13 on the day. Both teams shot just slightly over .400 from the floor in the quarter, but Oakland's defensive intensity kept them in the game, forcing six CMU turnovers in the quarter as the Golden Grizzlies continued to get steals and push the pace.

Macy Smith kicked the fourth off with a three-pointer, her tenth points of the game, followed by a pair of Skorupksi  scores as Oakland led 60-54 early in the final frame.

Baxter would continue her big game, scoring four more points in under a minute as a pair of free throws gave Oakland a bit of breathing room, leading 64-58 with 5:34 left in the game.

The free throws would spark a 5-0 spurt as a Skorupski free throw put Oakland up 67-58 with just under five minutes to play.

CMU responded with a 5-0 stint of their own as a layup by Demetria Prewitt cut the deficit to just four points (67-63) with just under two minutes remaining.

With the Chippewas forced to foul as the game crept under a minute left, the Golden Grizzlies were able to hang on to their lead and earn a 76-65 victory.

The Golden Grizzlies shot over .400 from the field for the second time this season, going 25-62 FG while hitting their second-most threes in a game this season (6) and their second most steals (16) in a single game.
