Women's Basketball Falls in Ann Arbor to Wolverines

ANN ARBOR, Mich. - The Golden Grizzlies were handed their second straight loss as they fell in an up-and-down shooting performance to the Wolverines in Ann Arbor.

Oakland jumped out to a quick 5-0 run as Sereniti Roberts-Adams opened the game with a quick turnaround jumper in her first career start, followed by a Kylie Buckley triple.

Oakland held the Wolverines without a bucket in all of their first four buckets, until Mila Holloway drained a shot from deep at the 7:11 mark to cut the gap to 5-3 in favor of Oakland.

After a pair of buckets by each team, Michigan freshman Syla Swords earned her first points of the night, a three with 5:46 left in the opening quarter to give Michigan a 8-7 lead. The Swords triple would spark a 7-0 run, which was halted by a Lianna Baxter triple as Oakland trailed 10-12 10-15 with two minutes left in the quarter.

Oakland's Dani Grim would hit a midrange jumper in the final minute to halt another Michigan run, closing out the first period as Oakland trailed 12-20 to the Wolverines.

The Oakland offense looked good in the opening frame, shooting .455 (5-of-11 FG) from the floor. Michigan's defense was able to take advantage of some late quarter turnovers by the Golden Grizzlies, scoring 12 points off six Oakland turnovers in the quarter.

The Golden Grizzlies started off the second quarter cold from the floor, going 0 for their first four shots, while Michigan leaped ahead on a 8-0 run to go up 28-12.

Both teams hit a cold spell from the floor in the second, as after their run the Wolverines missed four consecutive field goals of their own.

Oakland would break their scoreless streak with a Grim three at 4:03 as she reached five points on the day.

The teams would finish off the quarter on cold streaks once again, combining to shoot 8-35 (.228 FG%) from the field as Michigan led 17-35 at halftime.

Oakland made just two buckets (2-of-12 FG) in the second quarter after a start to the game. They were bit by the turnover bug in the first half as well, committing 15 turnovers in the first 20 minutes.

Grim's five points led the way for Oakland in the first half with five points (2-of-3 FG). With both teams struggling offensively coming out the opening half, the attention to taking care of the ball and creating quality shot chances would be key to deciding the winner of the contest.

Oakland saw a bit of an offensive jump in the third quarter, as Maddy Skorupski, the team's usual lead scorer, notched her first points of the game, scoring back-to-back buckets for five straight points as Oakland trailed 24-43 with just over five minutes left in the third quarter.

Oakland would continue to find an offensive rhythm as Macy smith scored her first points of the day on a jumper as Oakland thrived during a 7-2 run as the Golden Grizzlies trailed 31-50 with 2:42 remaining in the period.

Oakland would finish the quarter trailing 35-58, but took a 13 point jump offensively from the second to third quarter, scoring 18 points on .571 shooting (8-of-14 FG) in the third behind five points each in the period from Skorupski and Baxter.

The Golden Grizzlies also limited their mistakes in the third, turning the ball over just three times in the quarter after doing so nine times in the second.

The Wolverines would dominate the final quarter, outscoring Oakland 30-7 en route to a 42-88 victory.

While Oakland showed strong performances in the first and third quarters, shooting a combined 11-of-25 (.440) in those quarters, they shot just a combined 5-of-25 (.200) in the second and fourth quarters.
