LAWRENCE, Kan. – The Oakland Golden Grizzlies men's basketball team faced a tough challenge to cap its three-game road slate as it fell, 78-57, to the top-ranked Kansas Jayhawks tonight inside Allen Fieldhouse.
The Golden Grizzlies (1-3, 0-0 HL) were led by
Allen Mukeba who finished the night with a game-high 19 points, as
Buru Naivalurua followed suit with his 12 and led the Golden Grizzlies with nine boards.
The Jayhawks (4-0, 0-0 Big 12) saw four players record double-digit points as AJ Storr led the team with 16 points and Hunter Dickinson led off the glass with nine rebounds.
The Golden Grizzlies opened the game with energy on both ends of the court, as Naivalurua scored the game's first basket with a driving layup. Mukeba anchored the defense early with key rebounds and a steal, while
DQ Cole nailed a three-pointer to keep Oakland within striking distance early.
Kansas' depth and efficiency, however, began to show midway through the half. Rylan Griffen and Hunter Dickinson fueled the Jayhawks' attack, with Griffen connecting on a pair of three-pointers and Dickinson asserting himself in the paint. A 16-5 run stretched Kansas' lead to 41-20 late in the half.
Naivalurua responded with a pair of baskets, with a Kansas make sandwiched inbetween, as the Jayhawks ended the half with a buzzer-beating three to put Oakland down, 46-24, heading into the locker room.
At the break, the Golden Grizzlies shot at a .345 clip from the floor with a trio of threes made from range. Kansas shot well from the floor after the first 20, only missing nine shots as it was 19-of-28 (.679) from the floor with five makes from three.
Mukeba started off the half with a hard layup as the Golden Grizzlies and the Jayhawks started to go back-and-forth. Oakland hung around and was a tough test for the nationally-ranked Jayhawks as the game remained at bay. It appeared the Jayhawks were going to run away with the game, as it builts its lead up to 30 with 6:10 left to play, but there was no quit in the Golden Grizzlies.
Jayson Woodrich drilled a three with a few ticks over five minutes to play that sparked an Oakland 14-5 run that spanned five minutes and the remainder of the game. Kansas' five points came from just two shots, with one make from three and a jumper as time was winding down, as Oakland closed the gap to 21 as
Jaylen Jones made one final layup as the Golden Grizzlies battled against No. 1 Kansas but fell, 78-57.
As a whole, the Golden Grizzlies shot at a .436 clip from the floor and made six threes. Kansas' offense dipped in the second half as it shot at a .464 clip from the floor with only a a trio of makes from range as it ended with a .571 mark from the field. The Golden Grizzlies nearly out-rebounded the Jayhawks with their 30 compared the Kansas' 32, as Oakland came down with four more offensive board with a total of 10.
After three-straight road games where the Golden Grizzlies faced a pair of teams that were reciving votes in the AP Top-25, along with the top team in the nation, the team returns home Thursday (Nov. 21) as it'll host Eastern Michigan for Military Appreciation Night. Tip-off is slated for 7:00 p.m. ET and will be streamed live on ESPN+.
