WEST POINT, N.Y. — Army held off a resilient Oakland team 58-54 on Tuesday evening at Christl Arena, despite Oakland's guard duo of
Maddy Skorupski and
Macy Smith Combining for 36 points and five three pointers.
Oakland began with a solid offensive rhythm, marked by a three-pointer from
Maddy Skorupski at 8:11 that gave them an early 3-1 lead. Skorupski continued to attack, adding a layup shortly after.
With just over three minutes remaining, Oakland went on a 7-0 run, highlighted by a three-pointer from
Macy Smith at 3:21, giving the team momentum. Army responded with a 5-0 run of their own, sparked by a layup from Fiona Hastick at 6:06. The Golden Grizzlies narrowed the gap to one point at the end of the first quarter, trailing Army 15-14.
The Golden Grizzlies shot 35.7% in the first period, going a perfect 3-for-3 from beyond the arc, and Skorupski led all scorers with five points.
The second quarter saw Oakland's offense go cold, shooting just 15.4% (2-of-13 FG) from the field. Army's defense intensified, but the Golden Grizzlies' own defense limited Army's chances, with both teams struggling to find the basket.
Oakland managed a brief scoring stretch, going on a 4-0 run around the six-minute mark, as Skorupski converted a fast-break layup at 6:49. Army gained momentum with their own 4-0 spurt around the four-minute mark, including a three-pointer from Reese Ericson, helping them pull ahead and stretch their lead to 28-20 by halftime.
Macy Smith ended the half with nine points, while Skorupski recorded five rebounds. Oakland's defensive work helped them stay in contention, though their overall shooting consistency faltered.
Coming out of the half, Oakland displayed renewed intensity, powered by Skorupski's aggressive drives to the basket. At 8:11, Skorupski's layup kicked off a 6-0 run for the Golden Grizzlies, narrowing Army's lead to 30-26.
Smith also contributed to the run, scoring in transition, and Buckley added a layup to continue the momentum. Army answered back, using a crucial 6-0 run led by free throws and a layup from Soleil Montrose at 5:21 to re-establish their advantage.
Although Oakland closed the gap to just five points, Army maintained their lead. The Golden Grizzlies finished the quarter shooting 50% (6-of-12 FG) finding their groove on he offensive end. Army held a 44-35 lead as the game entered the final quarter.
The fourth quarter featured Oakland's most determined push of the game. Early in the quarter, Smith hit a layup at 7:25, sparking an 8-0 Oakland run that brought them within striking distance. With just 35 seconds left
Macy Smith nailed a critical corner three-pointer, bringing the Golden Grizzlies to within one point at 53-52.
Shortly after Smith's triple,
Sereniti Roberts-Adams and Skorupski capitalized on Army turnovers with layups that helped fuel a late surge. However, with Oakland forced to foul, Army's free-throw shooting proved crucial, as Camryn Tade sank four free throws in the final 30 seconds, lifting Army to the 58-54 victory.
Despite the loss, the Golden Grizzlies shot a higher percentage from the floor than Army, going 36.8% (21-of-57 FG) to Army's 34% (18-of-53 FG). Oakland also shot a higher percentage from three (35.7%, 5-of-14 3FG) than Army (30.4%, 7-of-23 3FG), while also leading in points in the paint (32-to-18).
Smith ended the game with 18 points (7-of-11 FG) and three assists, making at least three triples as well (3-of-6 3FG) for the second consecutive game. Skorupski also added 18 points of her own to go along with five steals and six rebounds. Buckley also almost scratched a double-double, pitching in nine points (3-of-5 FG) and seven rebounds.
For Army, Hastick led their scoring charge with 13 points on the night.
The Golden Grizzlies move forward to face the Michigan Wolverines on Sunday, Nov. 17 at 12 p.m. in Ann Arbor.
