Men's Soccer Has Unbeaten Streak Snapped in Road Loss to Panthers

MILWAUKEE, Wis. - The Golden Grizzlies headed to Milwaukee, where despite dominating the stat sheet, Oakland fell to the Panthers, snapping a five game unbeaten streak and suffering their first conference loss of the season.

With the teams sizing each other up in the early going, Oakland took a chance on goal first as Jace Foster attacked out wide, feeding a ball into the middle of Milwaukee's box where Jack Klomparens one-timed a ball at the middle of the net, where Panthers keeper Daniel Ibarra laid in wait for the save.

The Golden Grizzlies dominated possession to start the game, spending most of their time on Milwaukee's half of the pitch while taking two shots and two corner kicks in the first ten minutes of the match.

Even with Oakland controlling the game, the Panthers struck first in the 18th minute as Mitch Goodman took a free kick at midfield, servicing a ball into the box where Mesfin Roda was able to head the ball into the back of the net and put Milwaukee up 0-1.

Looking to respond quickly, the Golden Grizzlies saw a quality chance to equalize in the 23rd minute. Noah Roka sent a cross into the box where Marco Mazzei deflected the ball out of a scrum to Klomparens who appeared to find the equalizer, but a collision with Ibarra nullified the would-be goal for Oakland.

Ibarra would continue an impressive first half, as he earned a rare goalkeeper assist at the 36 minute mark, sending a long kick over an Oakland defense that was playing up, finding Alejandro Martinez who found Asher Ozuzu for a header goal to put the Panthers up 0-2 just before halftime.

The Golden Grizzlies led in every category but the scoreboard after the first 45 minutes, outshooting the Panthers nine to five in the first half, while also putting four shots on goal to Milwaukee's two, while earning more corner kicks (5) than the Panthers as well (2).

Klomparens and Andrew Darakdjian did their best to apply offensive pressure, both sending out three shots in the first half, with Klomparens adding two shots on goal and Darakdjian one. Noah Roka also put a shot on goal for the Golden Grizzlies.

Despite a two-goal hole to dig themselves out of, Oakland came out in the second half with the same aggression they began the game with, taking four shots in the first fifteen minutes of the half as Carson Ballagh, Darakdjian, Klomparens, and Foster all made efforts to cut the lead in half, none registering on goal.

The Golden Grizzlies finally broke through in the 63rd minute, as Abdul Al-Rashed started an Oakland run with a quick restart on a free kick, where he would outrun the entire Milwaukee defense before receiving an assist from Julian Kanzler before scoring his second goal of the season to cut Milwaukee's lead in half at 1-2 with plenty of time left in the game.

Continuing a back and forth second half, the Panthers added another goal to their tally, making it three goals on three shots on goal as Ryan Berghauer scored a right-footed one-timer on an assist from Roda to extend the lead back to two goals at 1-3 for Milwaukee.

The Panthers kept their foot on the gas as Ozuzu earned his first career brace, scoring another goal in the 79th minute as Milwaukee extended their lead to 4-1, and the score would stay there until the final buzzer.

Despite giving up their most goals to an opponent this season, the Golden Grizzlies registered a season-high in shots (21) and shots on goal (9), more than doubling Milwaukee in both of those categories.

Al-Rashed scored his second goal of the season, while Klomparens added an assist and a season-high seven shots in the game.

The Golden Grizzlies look to get back into the win column as they take a quick break from conference play to take on Depaul on Oct. 8 at 3 p.m.
