DETROIT, Mich. - On what was a busy weekend for the city of Detroit, it was just as busy for a familiar Oakland couple shined as they blazed the trail of the Detroit Marathon, together.
On Saturday, Oct. 20 the Detroit Free Press held their 47th annual marathon in Downtown Detroit. Beginning at 7 a.m., where thousands of runners set out to finish the 26.2 mile-long race. Former Oakland Cross Country and Track runner,
Andrew Bowman, and his wife, Sydney Devore-Bowman, took the crown as winners of the iconic race in their first race together.
After the race Andrew told WXYZ Channel 7 News, "This is our community, and for us to be a part of it, in this light, is amazing". Sydney added "You just have to just stay positive and believe in yourself".
Andrew took home the gold as the men's and overall winner of the marathon with a time of 2:17.47, while Sydney was crowned the women's champion with a time of 2:42.46.
Andrew is no stranger to running, as he was a spectacular student- athlete at Oakland from 2014-2018, with a career full of top finishes in races ranging from 2000m to 5000m, he earned the 2016 Horizon League Outdoor Track and Field Championship in the 3000m steeplechase, and also qualified for the NCAA Championships in Eugene, Ore. in 2018 after dominating the NCAA preliminary rounds also in the 3000m steeplechase.
After his time as a student-athlete at Oakland, Andrew also served as a grad assistant for the Oakland Track and Cross Country programs for three years.
