Golden Grizzly Pair Set to Partake in Olympic Marathon Trials

ROCHESTER, Mich. - When you have a dream, and a talent, you find ways to pursue that dream. Andy Bowman and Dot McMahan have both and are ready to take their shot at achieving their dream.

Bowman and McMahan will be participating in the Olympic Marathon Trials on Saturday, Feb. 3rd. They have both qualified for this event from previous races, and will now look to take the next step. Both runners are excited about the upcoming prospects, but they also have their support systems at Oakland to thank, and lean on.

"My time at Oakland was unforgettable," said Bowman, a former Golden Grizzly runner. "We accomplished a lot as a team and individuals, but I believe the friendships and bonds formed were truly more valuable than any of the accolades."

Bowman says his preparation for this race has been like any other marathon buildup, and he has some partners in crime helping him along the way.

"About 80 percent of my miles were run with my wife (also an Olympic trials qualifier), and our pups, Fin and Ranger."

This preparation has been done outside of his career as a financial advisor, as well as his coaching duties at Rochester University. As for his goal in the race, Bowman realizes the qualifying time is a tall task, but his focus in every race isn't on a time goal, but more on his effort, and realizing the special setting he's in.

"I want to feel like I have nothing left when I cross the finish line. A secondary goal is to take in the experience and enjoy the family time afterwards."

McMahan, a current assistant coach, also feels very fortunate to be a part of the Golden Grizzly family, saying she loves everything about Oakland, from the supportive and fun coaching staff, to the hardworking athletes. She's participating in the women's race for the fifth time, and realizes that it's an accomplishment, while also understanding the importance of appreciating this moment at this point in her career.

"I'm ecstatic to still be in the mix at this point," McMahan said. "I'll be running as long as my body allows it."

She, like Bowman, is business as usual in her preparation, saying this is just like any other marathon she's run. She also was clear about her goals.

"I hope to get the best out of myself that day and encourage others to run with me. I'm looking for a memorable experience rather than a fast time," McMahan said.

The Oakland family will be watching these two as they embark on this incredible journey, and there is no doubt that they will make those around them proud.
