ROCHESTER, Mich - The Oakland men's and women's cross country teams had a strong showing at the 21st edition of the Golden Grizzlies Open, highlighted by individual victories from freshman Eliza Bush and senior Wesley Hollowell and a handful of Oakland top-10 finishes in the 5k.
Bush led Oakland with a first-place finish, dominating the field with a time of 18:41.05. On their home course, senior Haileigh Bissett added to the team's success, finishing third overall with a time of 19:03.90, while Anne May crossed the line in fifth at 19:04.99, giving Oakland three top-five finishes.
Senior Sophy Skeels (19:09.46) placed sixth, and senior Ellie Voetberg (19:09.46) and freshman Ava Alicandro (19:13.05) followed in seventh and eighth, respectively. Genavieve Kushner-Lopez rounded out the top performers for the Oakland women with a ninth-place finish in 19:13.45.
Hollowell led the Oakland men's contingent with a stellar first-place finish, crossing the line in 14:42.33. Fifth-year Tristan Brandenburg followed soon behind with a third-place finish, recording a time of 14.53.99 to give Oakland more top finishes.
Further contributing to the team's efforts in the top-10, Anthony Hancock placed fourth with a time of 15:07.01, while Collin Farmer was right behind him, finishing seventh in 15:27.61. Josiah Magley clocked in at 15:30.21 to finish eighth, and Joe Shaya (15:32.15) and Carter McCalister (15:38.87) rounded out the top-10 for the Golden Grizzlies in ninth and tenth place.
The Golden Grizzlies will look to build on this momentum at its next event, the George Dales Invite, in Kalamazoo on Sept. 19.
