Women's Basketball Dominates in Opening Exhibition

ROCHESTER, Mich. - The Golden Grizzlies played their first official competition of the 2024-25 season as they headed to Rochester Christian for a weekend exhibition game.

The Golden Grizzlies jumped out to a big early lead, after starting the game tied at 3-3, Oakland jumped out to a 12-0 run to take a 15-3 lead with 5:02 left in the opening quarter. Macy Smith scored six consecutive points to close out the run.

With full control of the game in the early going, Oakland held a 22-8 lead at the end of the first quarter.

The second quarter would be more evenly matched. Lianna Baxter started the quarter with six quick points, while Dani Grimm added to her tally as well. The Warriors would close the quarter on a 7-2 run, only being outscored 17-to-14 in the quarter, but it wasn't enough as Oakland still held a 17-point lead (39-22) going into halftime.

Beginning the second half, Skorupski continued what was a dominant game, scoring 14 in the quarter alone as Oakland took a 65-38 lead going into the final quarter.

In the third Madison Royal-Davis tacked on five points, two rebounds, and a block, showcasing her all-around ability.

The fourth quarter was closely contested, as Rochester Christian outscored Oakland 28-26, but the Golden Grizzlies were still able to leave the game with a comfortable 91-66 victory.

Skorupski erupted for 26 points (10-of-15 FG), nine assists, and seven rebounds in a near triple-double performance. Grim had an impressive debut in the black and gold, scoring 15 points (6-of-10 FG), while Madison Royal Davis nearly earned a double-double with 10 points (4-of-7 FG) and seven rebounds. Lianna Baxter also pitched in with 10 points (5-of-8 FG).

As a team Oakland was dominant on the offensive end, producing high-quality shots en route to going .467 from the field (35-of-75 FG) while outscoring the Warriors in the paint 52-26, while also moving the ball at a great pace, earning 21 assists.

On defense, the Golden Grizzlies picked right back up where they did last season, forcing 19 turnovers. The squad also secured 15 steals and six blocks. Their defense proved to be their offense as they scored 24 points off Rochester turnovers with 15 fastbreak points.

Oakland moves on to their first official game of the season as they head to East Lansing for a season-opening challenge against the Michigan State Spartans on Nov. 5.
