Women's Basketball Falls in Opener to Spartans

EAST LANSING, Mich. - The Golden Grizzlies headed to East Lansing in their first official test of the regular season, falling  to a tough Spartans team.

The Spartans jumped out of the gate with a 10-0 run, hitting three of their first five shots and forcing three Oakland turnovers in the first three minutes.

Maddy Skorupski drew a foul and knocked down a free throw for Oakland's first points of the game, snapping MSU's run as the score tallied 1-10 with 7:09 left in the first quarter.

Skorupski did all of the scoring for the Golden Grizzlies early, starting the game 3-3 from the floor, including an and-one layup, as she scored all of Oakland's first eight points in the game.

Kylie Buckley scored her first points as a Golden Grizzly on a second chance bucket with 1:54 left in the opening quarter, helping Oakland gain a bit of rhythm, trailing 10-23.

The Spartans would close the quarter out on a 8-0 run behind seven of Theryn Hallock's 10 first quarter points (3-of-5 FG) as Oakland trailed 10-31 going into the second quarter.

After one, Oakland was bit by the turnover bug, flipping the ball 11 times to MSU's one. The Golden Grizzlies went 5-13 (.380) from the floor in the first quarter, just needing a higher volume of shots heading into the second, which would depend on their ball security.

After a Skorupski bucket to get her into double-digits started the second quarter, the Spartans sparked another run, this time an 11-2 spurt to go up 42-14 with 4:45 left in the first half, capitalized by a Julia Ayrault jumper for her ninth point (4-of-5 FG) of the night,

Oakland freshman Jaidyn Elam would halt the MSU run, cashing in a tough layup to move the score to 16-44 with just under four minutes remaining in the half.

After a pair of made Skorupski free throws with 3:17 remaining, MSU scored 11 unanswered to take a 58-18 lead into halftime.

Skorupski scored 12 (4-of-9 FG) of Oakland's 18 points, as Buckley, Sereniti Roberts-Adams, and Elam all scored two apiece.

The Spartan defensive pressure spelled trouble for the Golden Grizzlies in the opening half, forcing Oakland to shoot 7-20 FG (.350) and 0-8 from beyond the arc. The Golden Grizzlies turned the ball over 21 times to MSU's three, resulting in 26 points off of those turnovers.

After 20 minutes Hallock led the Spartans with 13 points (4-of-9 FG) , while Jocelyn Tate added 11 points (5-of-7 FG) and Grace VanSlooten pitched in 10 points (6-of-7 FT) and seven rebounds.

The Golden Grizzlies did hold their own in the paint on defense, swatting three shots in the first half, two by guard Dani Grim, while also grabbing just one less defensive rebound than MSU (9-to-10).

Oakland started off the second half on a positive note as Grim continued to be a defensive stopper, swiping the ball away from Hallock, leading to a Skorupski jumper.

Continuing their best offensive quarter thus far, Buckley and Macy Smith scored back-to-back buckets as Oakland matched their first quarter points total (10) with 4:42 left in the third.

The Spartans would save an otherwise ugly quarter for them by going on an 8-0 run to close out the third, but not before the Golden Grizzlies put up 15 points in the quarter, their highest of the night, as the score totaled 33-81 going into the final quarter of play.

Oakland became more comfortable in the quarter, scoring 10 points in the paint after scoring just six such points in the entire first half.

The Spartans held off the Golden Grizzlies in the fourth quarter, outsourcing them 26-9 as MSU secured the win 42-107

Oakland fell victim to a cold shooting night, going 16-52 FG (.308) compared to 34-69 (.420) shooting from MSU.

Skorupski finished with a game-high 19 points (7-of-9 FT) to go along with five rebounds and two steals. Roberts-Adams added six points, a steal, and two blocks in 17 minutes in her regular season debut,

The Spartans saw six players score in double-figures, led by 15 from VanSlooten.

The Golden Grizzlies will return to the Blacktop for their home-opener against Cleary on Friday, Nov. 8 at 11 a.m.
