Men's Soccer Jumps into First Place Behind Pair of Unanswered Second Half Goals

ROCHESTER, Mich. - The Golden Grizzlies continued their late-season hit streak as they snatched a 3-2 win over Robert Morris to take sole control of first place in the Horizon League with just two games remaining in the schedule!

The Golden Grizzlies jumped out to an immediate lead as star defender Zach Townsend scored his second goal in the last two games, being on the receiving end of a Carson Ballagh assist, with a header almost identical to his game-winning goal against Purdue Fort Wayne to give Oakland a 1-0 lead in just the 12th minute or play.

In a roller coaster of a game, the Colonials would not trail for long as they responded at the 19-minute mark with an equalizer from John Paul Mbuthia to knot the game at one goal apiece.

Oakland would continue to control pace and possession for most of the rest of the first half, but a costly counter-attack by Robert Morris resulted in a second unanswered goal by the Colonials as Kosi Udeh gave RMU a 2-1 lead just two minutes before halftime.

Despite being on the other end of a momentous run, the Golden Grizzlies held the shot advantage 8-to-4 at the end of the first 45 minutes, while both teams totaled three shots on goal.

With so much on the line in this match, the Golden Grizzlies came out of the break with a newfound intensity, pushing the pace and flipping the momentum on the Colonials.

Fresh off a substitution into the game, Oakland's Abdul Al-Rashed wasted no time making an impact, taking a shot by Markus Wienerroither that barely missed on goal, hitting the crossbar, and finding the back of the net on his own to score the equalizer and tie the game at 2-2.

Still on the attack, Oakland would score one of their biggest goals of the season as Ballagh earned his second assist of the game as he fed a ball into the box, finding Jayden Pinheiro for the game-winning goal in the 68th minute.

With two crucial unanswered goals of their own on the board, Oakland finished the game with a 14-to-9 shot advantage to secure a 3-2 win at home.

Not only does the win mark their third straight victory, but it gives the Golden Grizzlies sole place of first place in the conference by one point over the Colonials with the win.

"I'm satisfied with our performance. We challenged our players all week and we knew it was going to be a difficult contest and it was, but the boys stepped up to the challenge and I'm really proud of their performance," said Oakland Head Coach Paul Doroh after the win. "We wanted to get the ball settled instead of just trading moments with them (RMU) and we did. We adjusted a bit with our pressure in the second half and that made a big difference… Credit to the players, they are the ones out there doing the work and they got it done today."

Oakland will stay on home soil as they host Green Bay on Friday, Nov. 1 at 1 p.m.
