CLEVELAND, Oh. - The Golden Grizzlies fell behind early and were never able to recover as they suffered a 4-0 loss at Cleveland State.
The game's first major action came in the 6th minute when Cleveland State earned a corner kick. Madi Snyder connected with a header off Maria Bashardoust's delivery to score the first goal of the match, giving the Vikings a 1-0 lead.
Cleveland State maintained the pressure with several more opportunities. Erica Leinweber had her shot saved by Oakland goalkeeper
Julia Zangerl in the 9th minute, followed shortly by another save from Zangerl on a shot by Mayra Sesmas.
Oakland had its first chance in the 31st minute when
Lorelai Miller sent a shot wide. As the Golden Grizzlies tried to gain momentum, Cleveland State doubled their lead. In the 29th minute, Brooke Opferman scored after a long ball from Cortlyn Hefty and a cross from Leinweber, making it 2-0.
Minutes later, Opferman struck again. Assisted by Livia Penton, she finished a through ball with a shot from the top of the box, extending the Vikings' lead to 3-0.
Sunniva Raaen tried to answer for Oakland in the 42nd minute, but her shot missed the target, leaving the Golden Grizzlies scoreless at halftime.
Marina Downing had a key opportunity for Oakland in the 52nd minute as Oakland tried to bounce back, but her shot went just wide. Another chance came in the 71st minute when
Shannon Brown's shot was saved by Cleveland State goalkeeper Elyse Broderick. Shortly after, Oakland earned a corner kick but could not convert the opportunity.
Cleveland State put the game out of reach in the 74th minute when Leinweber scored off a pass from Cucchetti, nailing a shot off the post and into the net to make it 4-0.
Despite a final effort by Oakland, including a shot from Miller that was saved in the 80th minute, the Golden Grizzlies couldn't find the back of the net.
Jhelysse Anthony's late attempt in the 85th minute went wide, and the match concluded with a 4-0 Cleveland State victory.
Oakland recorded seven total shots, with two on target. Brown and Miller led the team with one shot on goal each. Despite earning five corner kicks to Cleveland State's three, Oakland was unable to capitalize. Cleveland State finished with 15 shots, including eight on goal, while Broderick made two saves to secure the clean sheet.
Oakland plays their final road game in their next match as they head to IU Indy on Saturday, Oct. 26.
