ROCHESTER, Mich. — Oakland fell to Northern Kentucky 4-1 in a women's soccer match Thursday evening at Oakland Soccer Field. The Norse were led by Lilly Yordy's two-goal performance, scoring both of her goals within five minutes in the second half, while
Grace Sampson provided the lone tally for Oakland in a tough Horizon League contest.
The first half saw Oakland's defense tested early. Northern Kentucky applied pressure from the start, forcing three saves from Golden Grizzlies goalkeeper
Julia Zangerl, including two early shots from Emilie Doersching and Lydia Self. Oakland managed three shots before the break, with forward
Marina Downing coming closest, but none were on target. In the 37th minute, the Norse broke through when Natalie Newman capitalized on a pass from Greta Harmeyer to put Northern Kentucky up 1-0 going into halftime.
After the break, the Norse widened the gap quickly. Erykah Cornett netted her second goal of the season in the 58th minute to double the lead, followed by Yordy's first goal at 59:15, assisted by Doersching. Just three minutes later, Yordy struck again, this time from an assist by Kylie Anderson, giving the visitors a commanding 4-0 lead.
Oakland's offense came alive in the final 15 minutes of the game.
Grace Sampson scored her first goal of the season in a wild sequence in the 76th minute cutting the deficit to 4-1. The Golden Grizzlies had multiple chances following Sampson's goal, including a blocked shot by
Shannon Brown and two wide attempts from
Lorelai Miller and
Sunniva Raaen. Despite their efforts, they couldn't close the gap further.
Statistically, Northern Kentucky outshot Oakland 21-11, with 11 of the Norse's attempts on target compared to just three for Oakland. Zangerl recorded seven saves for Oakland, while Megan Gessner, who came in as a substitute goalkeeper for Northern Kentucky, earned the win with two saves.
Marina Downing led Oakland with three shots, while
Kimee Liu had two shots on goal as well.
Oakland drops to 3-11-2 on the season, while Northern Kentucky improves to 8-6-1.
