Macey Wierenga scores on a penalty kick for the second-straight game

ROCHESTER, Mich. – The Oakland women's soccer team opened Horizon League play with a 1-1 draw against Purdue Fort Wayne Sunday afternoon from the Oakland Soccer Field on Alumni Day.

An unfortunate miscue from the Golden Grizzlies (2-4-3) led to an own goal by Oakland early in the first half to give PFW a 1-0 lead at the 19:19 mark.

Neither team was able to find the back of the net the remainder of the first half, with the Mastodons (4-3-3) heading into halftime with the 1-0 advantage.

For the second-straight game, graduate student Macey Wierenga converted on a penalty kick, tying the game at 1-1 in the 76th minute. The Caledonia, Mich. native's goal marks her third of the season, a team-best.
