ROCHESTER, Mich. – The Oakland women's soccer team opened Horizon League play with a 1-1 draw against Purdue Fort Wayne Sunday afternoon from the Oakland Soccer Field on Alumni Day.
An unfortunate miscue from the Golden Grizzlies (2-4-3) led to an own goal by Oakland early in the first half to give PFW a 1-0 lead at the 19:19 mark.
Neither team was able to find the back of the net the remainder of the first half, with the Mastodons (4-3-3) heading into halftime with the 1-0 advantage.
For the second-straight game, graduate student
Macey Wierenga converted on a penalty kick, tying the game at 1-1 in the 76th minute. The Caledonia, Mich. native's goal marks her third of the season, a team-best.
The Golden Grizzlies outshot PFW, 14-7, with three shots coming from Wierenga.
Frankie Mudd and
Shannon Brown also tallied three shots of their own.
Julia Zangerl played all 90 minutes in goal, recording two saves on the day for the Golden Grizzlies.
Oakland welcomes Northern Kentucky to the Oakland Soccer Field on Thursday, Sept. 21 at 5:30 p.m. Thursday's match-up will be broadcast on ESPN+.
