Golden Grizzlies open Horizon League play with impressive shutout victory over Cleveland State

CLEVELAND, Ohio - Playing their first Horizon League match of the 2023 season, the Oakland Golden Grizzlies blanked the Cleveland State Vikings, 3-0, on Saturday, September 9 at the Krenzler Soccer Field.

With the win, Oakland improves to 1-3-1 on the year, while the Vikings, who are the defending Horizon League champions and were picked by the conference's head coaches to repeat in 2023, now possess the same record.

His first goal of the season, redshirt senior midfielder Owen Smith started the scoring with a free kick from the top of the box in the 18th minute and graduate student forward Mikey Ketteman tallied the Golden Grizzlies' final two goals, which were his first of the year, as well.

Smith picked up an assist on Ketteman's second goal, too, and sophomore Jace Foster and freshman Donavan Phillip also recorded assists.

Making his second start of the season, graduate student goalkeeper Finn Jurak registered Oakland's first blank sheet of 2023, finishing the night with eight saves.
