ROCHESTER, Mich. - Announced by the club on July 28, former Oakland Golden Grizzlies standout shortstop Mike Brosseau has signed with the Chiba Lotte Marines of Nippon Professional Baseball (NPB) in Japan.
A two-time First Team All-Horizon League selection during his four seasons in Rochester from 2013-16, Brosseau, 29, is one of just five Golden Grizzlies with 200 career hits and also ranks in the top-10 in program history in games played, at-bats, runs scored, doubles, home runs and total bases.
Signing a free agent contract with the Tampa Bay Rays shortly after concluding his collegiate career, he transitioned to primarily playing third base and made his Major League debut on June 23, 2019, going 1-5 in a win over the Athletics at the Oakland-Alameda County Coliseum.
Commonly known for his series-winning home run off possible future Hall of Famer Aroldis Chapman in the 2020 American League Division Series and traded to the Milwaukee Brewers ahead of the 2022 campaign, Brosseau has now seen big league time in each of the last five seasons, working to the tune of a .242/.313/.428 slash line with 28 doubles, a triple, 26 long balls, 77 RBI and seven stolen bases in 241 games.
Playing 2023 on a $1.4M salary after avoiding arbitration with the club in December, Brosseau tallied 73 at-bats over 29 contests with Milwaukee this year and was designated for assignment on July 5 following the promotion of right-handed reliever J.C. Mejia.
Making two appearances with the Triple-A Nashville Sounds after passing through outright waivers, the Brewers granted Brosseau his release to allow him to pursue this NPB opportunity.
