CHICAGO, Ill. - Playing their second match of the day after previously squaring off with the Lindenwood Lions, the Oakland Golden Grizzlies were swept by the host UIC Flames on Friday, August 25 in the Chicago Classic at Credit Union 1 Arena.

Racing out to a 10-1 lead, the Flames, who were picked to finish third in the Missouri Valley Conference (MVC) Preseason Coaches Poll, won the first set 25-10 and the latter two by scores of 25-21 and 25-16.

Senior outside hitter Patti Cesarini paced the Golden Grizzlies with 10 kills and junior libero Emily Wichmann tallied the same number of digs, leading all players.

Graduate student setter Sarah Turner recorded 12 assists and junior opposite Sydney Green registered a couple of blocks.

For UIC, sophomore outside hitter Ayat Amin racked up 13 kills and classmate Francesca Ventruini finished with a match-high 21 assists.

Now 0-2 on the young 2023 season, Oakland will play their third and final match in the Chicago Classic on Saturday, August 26 against the St. Thomas (Minnesota) Tommies at 2 p.m.

Having played the same two opponents thus far, St. Thomas will bring an identical record into action Saturday.
