Preview: Renewed Match Up on Deck for Golden Grizzlies

ROCHESTER, Mich. – Oakland University Men's Soccer looks to come out of Cincinnati, Ohio with a win on Sunday, August 27 at 7:00 pm against Xavier University at Corcoran Field.

Oakland fell 4-0 to No. 11 Marshall University in Huntington, West Virginia on Thursday night as the home Thundering Herd outshot the 0-1-0 Golden Grizzlies 29-5.

Last Wednesday, the Horizon League released its annual #HLMSOC Preseason Coaches Poll where Oakland was selected third out of the ten competing teams. Cleveland State University and Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis occupy the top two spots.

Five different Golden Grizzlies had all five shots against Marshall; Mikey Ketteman, Ville Ahola, Marco Mazzei, Owen Smith, and newcomer Andrew Darakdjian. Zach Townsend played all 90 minutes along with Gabriel Baylon.

The Golden Grizzlies had two goalies check into the game on Thursday in Alex Flowers and Michael Sly Jr., who had a combined eight saves throughout ninety minutes.

Oakland stays on the road after Sunday with the University of Illinois-Chicago on Friday, September 1 and Loyola University Chicago on Monday, September 4.

SCOUTING THE MUSKETEERS

Xavier tied #HLMSOC foe Wright State University on Thursday 1-1 in Cincinnati as Sohei Matsumori knocked the tying goal with less than five to go in regulation.

On August 15, Makel Rasheed was named to the Preseason All-BIG EAST Team and was selected to the Nashville SC roster in the 2023 MLS SuperDraft presented by Adidas. In the BIG EAST Preseason Coaches Poll, the Musketeers were picked fourth in the Midwest Division with 39 votes.

Xavier and Oakland have not met since 1999 with the Golden Grizzlies leading the two-game series 2-0.

The Musketeers will travel to No. 11 Marshall University on Friday, September 1 before hosting Cleveland State University on Monday, September 4.
