Favero Earns Win No. 200 in Gutsy Slugfest with EMU

ROCHESTER, Mich. – Head Coach Juan Pablo Favero tallied win No. 200 on a muggy Sunday afternoon at the Oakland Soccer Field as his Oakland University Women's Soccer program gutted out a 1-0 win over Eastern Michigan University.

Scoring opened quickly for Oakland (1-1-0) in forward Anuhea Aluli as Macey Wierenga set up the sophomore with a right-footed jab as the ball reverberated to the back of the net. While the start was strong, a red card a few minutes later put the Golden Grizzlies in a 10-player bind.

From that point, the Eastern Michigan (0-1-1) attack put on the afterburners in the first half, staying within Oakland's defensive zones and giving freshman Julia Zangerl a plethora of shots as the Eagles chipped away with their man-up opportunity.

With the lead at the half, Oakland managed to hold off 11 shots from Eastern Michigan with the final minutes intensifying opportunities for the Eagles while a handful of offside calls kept the onslaught of speed to a manageable amount.

Despite the 11-2 shot difference in the second half alone, Oakland stood tall with the invitation of student-athlete families in the crowd for the team's first win of 2023.

At the end of 90 minutes, Favero earned his 200th victory in rememberable fashion: a 1-0 win, down a student-athlete, and in intense 90-degree heat.
