Oakland dropped its regular season opener 2-1 to Kent State University on a soggy Thursday night with Macey Wierenga getting the penalty shot goal along with a solid chance to knot the game up with short time remaining.

20 Golden Grizzlies saw action on Thursday with only the goalkeeper, Hayley Lindow, seeing all 90 minutes of play. The junior faced 14 shots, nine of which were on goal, including a point-blank penalty shot to usher in a new defensive era for Oakland.

Along with Wierenga's aforementioned two shots, newcomer Putri Sazali put up two attempts as well in the starting rotation. In fact, four of the starting 11 were newcomers to the team whereas six subs were fresh legs to the team as well.

These two teams met on August 7 of last year in the exhibition season where Oakland came away with the home win 3-0. In the annual Mid-American Conference (MAC) Preseason Poll, the Eagles were ninth of 12 competing teams in the conference. The Horizon League released its Preseason Poll as well with the Golden Grizzlies second.

Due to the weather, last Thursday's ESPN+ broadcast was canceled. The makeup date has been scheduled for September 17 against Purdue University Fort Wayne.

SCOUTING THE EAGLES

The Eagles tied St. Bonaventure University 2-2 in Ypsilanti on Thursday night with Megan Lukowski and Kate Robinson accounting for the two goals. This will be the first time Oakland and EMU have played in the regular season since 2019 which ended in a 2-2 draw.

Midfielder Maddie O'Farrell attempted 10 shots in Thursday's tie with four of those on goal testing the Bonnie's goalkeeper. Three Eagles played in all 90 minutes in Ashley Schneider, Mary Grimes, and Emma Holland.

Holland did allow the two goals between the pipes but also came away with two saves as the EMU defense allowed only eight shots off (four of course on goal).
