#HLSB Doubleheader Split in Competitive Outing in Rochester

ROCHESTER, Mich. – Oakland University Softball split a contested doubleheader with Green Bay in #HLSB play on Friday, securing a shutout before falling in a tense comeback attempt at the OU Softball Field.

GAME ONE // OAKLAND 4, GREEN BAY 0

Sydney Campbell tossed two strikeouts to kickoff game one of the doubleheader as the Golden Grizzlies' offense wasted no time getting a run on the board starting with a walk to Madi Herrington in the bottom of the first.

The sophomore moved over to second off Allisa DiPrima's sacrifice bunt and then over to third as the Phoenix's first baseman threw an error past the shortstop's glove. Jen Krizka then belted a triple that slapped the right field wall for an RBI and the 1-0 lead.

Green Bay would threaten runners in scoring position in subsequent attempts at the plate with the game holding at 1-0 heading into the bottom of the sixth.

In the Oakland offensive stint, both Leah Bieniewicz and Kamryn Troyer singled to get on base with the bases loaded the next at-bat for Jenna Johnston as Green Bay committed another fielding error. Maci Brown tallied two RBI's in the next attempt, singling through the right side to greenlight Bieniewicz and Troyer home.

DiPrima's sacrifice fly to left field allowed for the unearned run of Johnston to make things a 4-0 ball game as the Golden Grizzlies' defense needed to make three outs to finish the job.

Green Bay doubled to right field starting out the seventh while the next batter flying out to center field. With only one out on the board and a runner on second, the Phoenix pelted the ball straight into Brown's glove at second for the line out as the junior made the throw to Reese Ruhlman at short to finish game one on a double play.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS
  • Brown finished 2-3 at the plate with two RBI with five others recording a single hit
  • Oakland drew six walks to Green Bay's four
  • This is Krizka's second triple of the year, 10th overall for the team
  • Sydney Campbell gets the win with no earned runs and four strikeouts

GAME TWO // GREEN BAY 4, OAKLAND 2

Opposite of game one, Green Bay started out with a single to left field in the first, reinforced by a stolen base as the rest of the Phoenix's offense popped up to various infielders. Oakland went three-up-and-three-down in the inning, moving into the second with a Krizka double down the right field line.

The bases would be loaded as Krizka moved over to second off a wild pitch with first being occupied by Ruhlman following a walk. Both moved over as Taylor Carraway single to the glove of the pitcher through none of the three baserunners scored with put-out after put-out tagging home plate.

Green Bay had a massive inning in the fourth, emerging with four runs to Oakland's none as the Golden Grizzlies only seemed to have an offensive answer in the bottom of the sixth.

DiPrima reached first off a single to third, moving to second with Krizka's walk with both moving via Ruhlman's single to left field. The freshman Carraway stepped up to the plate and delivered a two RBI double to right center, cutting down the Phoenix's lead by two at 4-2 after six.

Campbell entered the circle in the seventh for Oakland as the defense held and only three outs to work with to complete the comeback in Rochester. A strikeout swinging followed by a few fly-outs to the outfield sealed the deal for Green Bay, splitting the early doubleheader on Friday.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS
  • Ruhlman went a perfect 2-2 at the plate with a walk, Carraway with a 2-3 showing
  • Oakland left six runners on base following seven innings
  • Three different pitchers made their appearances, Mia Konyvka (0-4) received the loss

Both teams will conclude the three-game stand on Saturday, April 8 at Noon in Rochester at the OU Softball Field as the winner will take the #HLSB series.
