Golden Grizzlies take series finale with Sunday victory over Wright State

ROCHESTER, Mich. – A vital Horizon League victory, the Golden Grizzlies defeated the Wright State Raiders, 6-3, on Sunday, April 30 in the finale of a three-game series at the Oakland Baseball Field.

Residing in third place in the conference standings, the Golden Grizzlies improve to 19-25 (11-10), while Wright State is now 25-18 (15-6) and tied with the Northern Kentucky Norse atop the Horizon League.

Entering with a Raider on first and no outs in the fifth and departing with one out in the ninth, junior right-hander Brandon Decker picked up his team-leading fifth win, allowing just one run on three hits with a trio of walks and four strikeouts over these 4.1 innings.

Redshirt senior righty Sean Fekete made his fourth start of the year, giving up two runs on four hits over his four-plus frames, and graduate student Christian Stelling and redshirt senior Bryce Konitzer recorded the final two outs, resulting in the first save of the season for the latter.

One of only two players in the game to tally multiple hits, as he was joined by Wright State redshirt sophomore third baseman Luke Arnold, graduate student first baseman Gabe Lux went 2-5 for Oakland, including a big two-out, two-run single in the second.

Stretching the Golden Grizzly lead to 5-2, redshirt sophomore center fielder Drew Collins scored on a wild pitch in the sixth and added the final run of the contest on a pinch-hit double by junior Lucas Loos in the eighth.

The Raiders' first two runs came via the long ball, with Ashland, Ohio junior first baseman Jay Luikart hitting the first in the second and Lebanon, Ohio's Arnold providing the other in the fifth.

The left-handed Luikart, who also serves as Wright State's closer, drove in the last Raider run of the afternoon, as well, grounding out to score Columbus, Indiana junior designated hitter Julian Greenwell in the eighth.

Lawrenceburg, Tennessee junior righty Luke Stofel (2-4) started and took the loss for Wright State, finishing with a line of five runs, only one of which was earned, on five hits with a walk and six strikeouts over 5.1 innings.

ANOTHER COLLINS WEB GEM
For the second-straight day, Collins brought a home run back and kept a Raider run off the scoreboard.

After taking one away from junior catcher Sammy Sass in Game 2 of Saturday's doubleheader, he did it to sophomore left fielder Boston Smith on Sunday in a play that looked extremely similar to the previous day's edition.

Occurring with one out in the sixth, Smith hit a towering fly ball to left center but Collins had a beat on it the entire way, using his outstretched right, throwing hand to keep enough distance between himself and the eight-foot wall before extending his glove two feet over it to make the catch.

As with Saturday, Collins had a cool reaction about the highlight reel play, simply tossing the baseball back in to redshirt senior shortstop Thomas Green and continuing about his business.

UP NEXT
Beginning a four-game road swing, Oakland will play the Mid-American Conference's (MAC) Bowling Green Falcons on Wednesday, May 3 at 3 p.m. at Steller Field.

This will be followed by a return to Horizon League play with a three-game set against the Milwaukee Panthers at Franklin Field from Friday-Sunday, May 5-7.
