OU Sweeps Metro Series, Sets School Record for Single-Game Home Runs

DETROIT, Mich. – Oakland University Softball history was made as the Golden Grizzlies finished the series sweep of #HLSB rival University of Detroit Mercy in the Metro Series at Buysse Ballpark on Wednesday.

GAME ONE // OAKLAND 7, DETROIT MERCY 5

The days-long slugfest began with a slow build as the game sparked off in the third inning with Makayla Jauregui's bunt single, advancing to second and then third off two-straight walks thrown to Maci Brown and Allisa DiPrima to load the bases.

Reese Ruhlman then popped the second grand slam of the series with four runs batted in and a four-run edge early on in the middle of the third inning.

In the bottom of the fourth, Detroit Mercy smacked a lead-off home run to pull back within three runs where the game stood until the bottom of the sixth in which the Titans put three runs across on the board at 5-4.

The game-tying run was scored by UDM by a single to center field, pushing the game to extra innings in game two of the Metro Series tied 5-5.

Madi Herrington's bunt single put the sophomore on base for Leah Beiniewicz to knock her first home run of the junior's career to steal the game at 7-5.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS
  • Ruhlman went a perfect 2-2 at the plate with four RBI, Bieniewicz's only hit of the game yielded two RBI
  • Six Golden Grizzlies registered a hit in game one of the doubleheader
  • Three pitchers entered the game with Sydney Campbell being granted the win off 3.0 innings, no earned runs, and three strikeouts

GAME TWO // OAKLAND 8, DETROIT MERCY 2

DiPrima's first homer of the season cleared the wall in left center for a solo shot and the 1-0 lead early on in the leadoff spot of the second inning in game two.

The score held until the top of the fourth as Herrington notched her first career home run followed by Bieniewicz reaching all the way to third from an error by the Titans and a wild pitch from the UDM arm.

Mia Konyvka then stepped to the plate and delivered her third home run of the series with two RBI by bringing Bieniewicz home as the Golden Grizzlies inflated their lead to 4-0.

Ruhlman planted a solo home run in the next inning as Oakland led 5-0 with two more runs coming in the top of the sixth via Bieniewicz's double to center field and Jenna Johnston's RBI single to right. One more run crossed with Jauregui's RBI double to right center.

Detroit Mercy saw a home run of their own get two across before Krizka's second homer of the game planted the fifth HR in the stat sheet and the eighth run on the board.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS
  • Oakland's five single-game home runs is the most in program history, besting four other games that featured four runs (this includes game one of today's doubleheader which had four homers)
  • Ruhlman, Herrington, DiPrima, and Johnston all went 2-4 at the plate
  • Konyvka led the team with two RBI
  • Campbell advances to 11-4 on the year with two earned runs and five strikeouts in 29 batters faced

Oakland will go to a four-game non-conference slate this weekend starting in Oxford, Ohio in a neutral site game with the No. 1 team in the country, Oklahoma University on Saturday, April 15.
