Golden Grizzlies fall to Southern Indiana in 11-inning Sunday slugfest to round out weekend series

EVANSVILLE, Ind. – A game that saw the two teams combine for 29 hits, seven of which went for extra-bases, and seven runs in the final frame, the Southern Indiana Screaming Eagles defeated the Oakland Golden Grizzlies, 12-11, in 11 innings on Sunday, March 12 at the USI Baseball Field to complete a three-game weekend set.

Oakland took the first two games of the series and now stands at 5-9, while the Screaming Eagles snap a six-game skid and improve to 6-9.

Inheriting a one-on, one-out situation with the Golden Grizzlies clinging to an 11-10 lead in the 11th, Janesville, Wisconsin freshman right-hander Jaxson Easterlin was hit with the loss for Oakland, while junior and Evansville native Caleb Meeks picked up his second win for Southern Indiana after working the top of the inning.

His fourth and very possibly best start of the year thus far, senior southpaw Travis Densmore went a season-high six innings, allowing six runs on seven hits with two walks and a season-high six strikeouts, throwing 92 pitches.

Outside of Densmore and Easterlin, four other Golden Grizzly pitches saw action, with graduate student left-hander Christian Stelling and junior righty Brandon Decker handling two innings apiece.

Redshirt senior shortstop Thomas Green singled home junior designated hitter Ryan Dykstra to give Oakland a 1-0 lead just four batters into the game, but the Screaming Eagles responded in a big way, scoring five times in the bottom of the first.

Beginning with a solo shot by Oregon, Ohio redshirt sophomore center fielder Drew Collins in the second, his second of the year, the Golden Grizzlies gradually clawed their way back over the next several frames and took the lead, 8-6, with a pair of runs in the eighth.

Southern Indiana scored two runs with two outs in the ninth to force extras and both clubs went scoreless in the tenth. Oakland went back ahead by three, 11-8, in the 11th after a single off the bat of redshirt sophomore right fielder Reagan Paulina and a throwing error by Screaming Eagles junior catcher Parker Stroh resulted in a trio of runs scoring.

Starting with a double by junior right fielder Ren Tachioka and ending with fellow junior and designated hitter Jack Ellis' walk-off single, the final five Southern Indiana hitters reached base against three Golden Grizzly pitchers in the 11th, giving the Screaming Eagles four runs and the one-run victory in the finale of this weekend set.

Collins tied a career-high with four hits for Oakland and Green had his second-straight game with three knocks. Over the last four games, the former is hitting .438 (7-16) with two triples, a home run, six runs scored and five RBI and is tied for the team lead with three stolen bases this season.
