DAYTON, Ohio - The Golden Grizzlies fell in its final non-conference game of the regular season against the Dayton Flyers, 91-67, tonight inside the UD Arena.
Trey Townsend led the Golden Grizzlies (6-7, 1-1 HL) with a game-high 21 points with 13 in the second half of play. Townsend, who went 8-of-18 from the floor, brought down three boards with one assist. Off the glass,
Isaiah Jones and
Jack Gohlke led the way as Jones outpaced Gohlke by one with his eight boards.
The Flyers (9-2, 0-0 A10) had five of its players, and four starters, record double-digit points as Javon Bennett led the team with 19 points and was 7-of-10 from the field with five from three. Matching Jones' eight boards, DaRon Holmes II led the Flyers with eight off the glass and was 4-of-7 from the floor for 10 points.
Blake Lampman came out of the gates firing and drilled a three in the Golden Grizzlies opening possession. Dayton answered with one of its own, but Townsend hit a jumper to put the team back on top. The Flyers once again answered and followed it up with one from range to give itself its first lead of the game.
Nearly two minutes went by before either team converted as Townsend cut into the Flyers lead, but yet another three put it at 11-7 in the opening 5:00 of play. The Flyers were lethal from range as 12 of its first 14 points were beyond the arc.
A made free throw followed by a make from
Chris Conway cut into the Flyers lead, but another make from range by Dayton, its fifth in 11 minutes, forced the Golden Grizzlies to continue to play from behind.
Tuburu Naivalurua made it a three-point game, but five-straight from the Flyers quickly put the lead back to eight.
Dayton held its pace as both teams traded points but Jones drove hard to the bucket and drew the foul while his shot dropped. Jones followed it up with a make from the charity stripe, but the Flyers made a pair of three's and two jumpers for 10 points in-a-row to put the Golden Grizzlies deficit to double-digits for the first time of the contest. Gohlke put the 10-0 run to a halt with a three of his own, but the Flyers answered right back.
The first half concluded with free throws from both ends as the Golden Grizzlies went into the locker room down, 46-28.
The Flyers hit at a clip over .500 both from the field and beyond the arc with nine of its 15 makes coming from range. The Golden Grizzlies went 11-of-26 (.420) from the floor with two makes from deep. Dayton nearly outrebounded the Golden Grizzlies, 15-13, with three offensive boards from both sides. In total, the Flyers went on a 21-8 run in the final five minutes of play.
Townsend got the scoring started in the second half with a jumper, but another quick seven from the Flyers extended its lead. The Flyers missed off a three-ball and the board fell into the hands of Conway which started a fast break. He found Gohlke who pulled up from downtown and drained it, followed by another two points from Townsend early on.
Townsend continued with the hot hand and scored seven-straight to slowly cut into the Flyers lead as the team went on a 10-0 run to put itself down by 13. The Flyers eventually found the basket and made one from range. Townsend tallied his ninth-straight point for Oakland after he drove hard to the basket for a layup, followed by threes traded by both teams as Gohlke got in on the action.
Oakland went the next 6:11 without a make from the field, with two points from the free throw line in that span, as Naivalurua made his first three-point shot of the season to end the drought. The Flyers went on to extend its lead with more makes from range, something it utilized throughout the night, and grew that lead to as large as 30 before
DQ Cole made a three of his own. The teams traded some points as the clock wound down as the Golden Grizzlies fell, 91-67.
Townsend tallied 13 of his points in the final 20 as the Golden Grizzlies shot 15-of-34 from the field (.380) with six from deep. The Flyers continued to make its shots from three and hit nine from range to bring its game total to 18. The Golden Grizzlies, in total, went 26-of-60 (.430) from the field and totaled 31 boards in the contest. Both teams utilized its bench as 24 of Oakland's points were off the bench and 31 from the Flyers bench.
The Golden Grizzlies get the holiday break off before it returns to play Thursday, Dec. 28. The team is set to faceoff against Cleveland State on the road with tip-off set for 7:00 p.m. ET.
