First Place Men's Soccer Heads to Green Bay for Final Away Game of 2023

Rochester, Mich. - After a thrilling victory over Robert Morris, Oakland heads west to play Green Bay in their final visiting game of the season.

Oakland has snatched first place in the Horizon League after their late-game victory over Robert Morris on Oct. 21. In what was a tough game, Oakland turned to two big-time names to help them eek out a win.

Reigning #HLMSOC Defensive Player of the Week Michael Sly Jr. had a career game against Robert Morris with nine saves, his most in a single game this season. While Sly Jr. provided the defense, freshman Donavan Phillip provided the offense with a goal in the 84' minute to break the tie and seal the Oakland victory 1-0.

Oakland is looking to create a cushion between them and second place IUPUI, who sit just two points behind the Golden Grizzlies.

If history is any indicator, then Oakland is favored going into their matchup at Aldo Santaga Stadium. Oakland is 10-1-1 all time against the Phoenix. In their matchup last October, the game ended in a 0-0 tie, but before that Oakland had won four straight in this series.

SCOUTING THE PHOENIX

Green Bay is on somewhat of a hot streak. They haven't lost a game in the month of October, with their last loss coming on Sept. 30 against Wright State. Although their current streak does include a couple ties, they have played their way into a three-way tie with Purdue Fort Wayne and Detroit Mercy for third place in the Horizon League with 11 points.

Green Bay most recently took out second-place IUPUI in a 2-1 victory, and they're looking to score another upset this weekend.

Sophomore Chris Album has six goals on the season, ranking fifth in the Horizon League, while sophomore Jake Parish ranks sixth in assists with four.

This 2 p.m. matchup is sure to be high-stakes as the season winds down!
