Rochester, Mich – The Golden Grizzlies earned their first back-to-back wins of the season with a big-time 2-1 win over IUPUI on Thursday. Oakland looks to lengthen their winning streak to three games as they host Green Bay on Sunday, Oct. 15.
Oakland looks to play with the same fast-paced tempo and resilience that they showed against IUPUI. They controlled possession for most of the game and showed they have the grit and physicality to be a top team in the conference.
Oakland's two game winning streak is tied for the longest active streak in the Horizon League. Northern Kentucky, who sits one spot below Oakland in the standings, has also won back-to-back games.
Current standings and history give the Golden Grizzlies the edge in their upcoming matchup, as they sit six spots ahead of Green Bay in the current Horizon League standings.
Oakland owns a favorable 7-3-2 all-time record against the Phoenix. While last year's matchup in Green Bay ended in a tie (0-0), Oakland has the most recent victory in the series with a dominating 6-0 win on the Oakland Soccer Field in September 2021.
SCOUTING THE PHOENIX
Green Bay currently sits at the bottom of the Horizon League standings, being the lone team in the conference without a win this season (0-9-4, 0-5-2 HL).
While their season has been a bit of a struggle, the Green Bay goalkeepers have showed promise in short stints.
In seven games played, freshman goalkeeper Mallorie Benhart ranks ninth in the Horizon league in total saves (44) and first in saves per game (6.29). Also in seven games played, sophomore goalkeeper Payton Lang is tenth in saves (36) and third in saves per game (5.17).
