Golden Grizzlies Claim Victories at the Oakland Aquatic Center

ROCHESTER, Mich. - Oakland swim and dive teams finished off the weekend of competition with Horizon League competitors IUPUI and Youngstown State resulting in Golden Grizzly sweep across the board with first place titles handed to Oakland.

The women kicked it off with a first-place finish in the 400-yard medley relay behind the speed of the A relay team consisting of Susan LaGrand, Sohvi Nenonen, Mia Keranen, and Jordyn Shipps with a time of (3:42.87). The men followed after with heat one of the C relay team with Sebastian Aquirre, Andrew Bernsdorf, Dane Herrick, and Charlie Brown and touched first with a time of (3:17.50), and to couple this the second heat was claimed by Oakland's A relay team consisting of Marko Khotynetskyi, Christian Bart, Sofus Balladone, and Sam McKenzie with a remarkable new record time of (3:11.32). 

Following with the 1650 freestyle, Oakland's Aidan Boldt swam into the first place spot as he knocked down a time of (16:29.62), and Mia Englender touched first for the women and fourth overall with a time (17:28.24). In heat two of the mile, Angelina Baker earned her second-place win for the women with a time of (17:12.26), and Bora Kutlu recorded a time of (16:17.83) for the men, respectively.

Kiera Brough delivered in the first heat of the 200-yard freestyle with a final time of (1:54.72), and finishing off the second heat, LaGrand took the first-place title with a swift time of (1:48.65). On the flip side, Bernsdorf roped in a third-place finish as he finished with a time of (1:42.40)

Cantrell Jonas and Harry Nicholson delivered side-by-side wins as they swept the men's 200-yard freestyle with a first-place time from Cantrell (1:39.75) and a speedy second place finish from Nicholson (1:39.82). 

Alyssia Betancourt took away the women's 50-yard backstroke with the title time of (26.59), and Khotynetskyi claimed it for the men with a time of (22.05) with Balladone right beside him at (23.09). Betancourt would then later take the winning finish for the 100-yard backstroke with a time of (57.86). Similarly, Khotynetskyi stacked another first place win in the 100-yard backstroke for the men claiming a time of (47.55).

Taylor Bailey made her mark in the lane as she dominated the women's 50-yard breaststroke with a time of (29.26), and Bart swam in at a time of (24.71) just short of the first-place finish behind IUPUI's Logan Kelly (24.66). Bart later finished the 100-yard breaststroke with a time of (54.12) for another second place finish. 

Mia Keranen outswam her competition in the lane with a first-place finish in the women's 100-yard butterfly with a time of (56.02), and James Hart made a notable second-place finish for the men with a final time of (50.94) in heat one, and McKenzie came in at heat two with a second-place time (49.32).

Shipps came back to take the 50-yard freestyle title for the women with a final time of (23.33), and Herrick made an energetic finish for the men as he knocked down a first-place time of (20.76) in heat one, and Micah Scheffer took the second-place slot in heat two of the 50-yard freestyle swimming in at a time of (20.30).

Riihinen secured second-place for the women's 100-yard freestyle with a final time of (51.39), and Scheffer and Cantrell made impressive strides in the pool to claim second and third place finishes for the men (45.45, Scheffer) and (45.64, Cantrell).

LaGrand made an incredible first place finish flying past her personal best by three seconds in the women's 100-yard breaststroke with a time of (1:02.45). Additionally, Golden Grizzlies Nenonen, Gary, and Lewis occupying the top four spots on the leaderboard for the event.  

In the two heats of the women's 500 free, Baker made the first place finish with a time of (5:00.85), and Davis make an exciting finish in a tight race to take home the first place title with a time of (4:36.32). 

Sam Thiessen tallied the second place finish with a time of (26.70) in the first heat of the women's 50-yard freestyle, and Shipps came in at the second heat to take the title with a time of (24.78). On the men's side, Brown earned the first place win with his fast time of (22.26), and in the second heat McKenzie finished at a time of (22.35). 

Bailey and LaGrand both took the first place slots in the two heats of the women's 100-IM with times of (57.70 ,Bailey) and (55.57, LaGrand). This performance marks the fastest mid-major level IM time in the country for the Grand Rapids native. And Oakland's Bernsdorf and Mackenzie delivered two more speedy victories in the lanes with a final times of (52.47, Bernsdorf) and (49.70, McKenzie) for the mens 100-IM. 

To cap off the weekend, the Golden Grizzlies finished with the 200-yard freestyle, accumulating two more wins with both women's A relay team (1:34.48) and men's A relay team (1:21.00)

Ellie Chalifoux stayed on top for the diving team accumulating a final score tally of 306.35 for the weekend. Notably, Victoria Sanders recorded a final score of 230.05 putting her in fourth place for the meet. 

The Golden Grizzlies will return back to the water for another home meet on Friday, January 20th, against Bowling Green.
