Oakland Headed Off to Indianapolis to Take on IUPUI

ROCHESTER, Mich - The Oakland Women' Soccer team is taking on IUPUI this Saturday, October 1 at the Michael A. Carroll Stadium in Indianapolis, Indiana. 

The Golden Grizzlies are 3-2-6 for the season and 0-1-2 for conference. Oakland is coming off of a tough fought game against Purdue Fort Wayne. Strong offense pushed the momentum especially in the second half of the game with a goal from Izzy Karkaba and an assist from Macey Wierenga. However, just under the 15 minute mark to end the game, the Mastodons put one in the net to win. 

Goal leaders for the Golden Grizzlies this season are Alexa Sabbagh with three goals and one assist, along with Sami Lopez and Macey Wierenga with one goal and two assists each. Following them is Jayna Fraser with one goal and one assist. And behind Fraser with one goal each are Shannon Brown, Izzy Karkaba, Juliana Karkaba, Sharon Sampson, and Kendra Zak. 

Goalkeeper Noemi Stadelmann is currently at 25 saves playing 849 minutes and 30 seconds for the season. Her save percentage is at 83.3%. Alongside her, goalkeeper Haley Lindow makes eight saves this season with 140 minutes and 30 seconds of play with a save percentage of 80%.

The United Soccer Coaches revealed its weekly North Region Poll with Oakland standing the No. 10 team in the region. 

SCOUTING REPORT

The Jaguars are currently 5-1-5 for the season and 1-1-2 for conference. They are coming off a tie from Wright State this past Sunday. 

Goal leaders for the season are Maya Lacognato with six goals, Emma Frey with three goals, Emma Antoine with three goals as well, and Sam Slimak with two goals. 

Goalkeeping for the Jaguars consists of Ashton Kudlo with 795:53 minutes of play this season, 28 saves, and a save percentage of 77.8%. Alongside her is goalkeeper Cailynn Junk with 194:07 minutes, 10 saves and a save percentage of 76.9%.

 


NATIONAL RECOGNITION
The United Soccer Coaches revealed its week one North Region Poll on August 23 with Oakland the No. 6 team in the region just behind Michigan and above Indiana, respectively.

FAVERO CONTRACT EXTENDED
Head Coach Juan Pablo Favero's contract has been extended through the 2026 season, Oakland University announced in August.

PRESEASON NO. 1
Oakland was selected as the preseason favorite in the 2022 #HLWSOC Preseason Poll with 115 votes and five first-place votes. 

NEWCOMERS TO WATCH
Seven newcomers enter the 2022 Golden Grizzlies roster on both sides of the field including transfer Allie Tefend and freshman Anuhea Aluli from Hawaii. 

LOPEZ PLAYER TO WATCH
Midfielder Sami Lopez is one of 38 women named to an exclusive list that is the NCAA Division I Players to Watch release which included four returning All-Americans from a year ago. Lopez is the only Horizon League student-athlete mentioned. 

FOUR ON 2021 #HLWSOC ALL-LEAGUE TEAM
Lopez and Zak find themselves on the All-League First Team roster with Dhlamini on the Second Team List in 2021. Rounding out the honors was Sharon Sampson on the All-Freshman Team squad. 

NATIONAL TEAM - GOLDEN GRIZZLIES
Dhlamini and Sharon Sampson are two Golden Grizzlies playing on the national stage as Dhlamini's South African National Team won the 2022 WAFCON final to qualify for the Women's World Cup in 2023. Sampson made a roster spot on the U-20 "Black Princess of Ghana" National team, playing in the 2022 FIFA U-20 World Cup in Costa Rica.
