Seniors Solidify 2-1 Win Over RMU

ROCHESTER, Mich.Seniors Dawsun Schrum and Reid Sproat led the Oakland Men's Soccer team to their first win of the 2022 regular-season as the Golden Grizzlies emerged victorious over the Colonials of Robert Morris University Wednesday night at the Oakland Soccer Field.

Oakland got the ball rolling early in the match with their first goal of the night coming at the 11' from Schrum. The Sterling Heights Stevenson product would dribble the ball into the right side of the RMU box, eventually floating a soft shot over the Colonials keeper and into the top left corner of the net, giving Oakland the early 1-0 edge. Owen Smith and Gabriel Baylon would be credited with the assists.

In the closing seconds of the first half, Robert Morris knotted it up via a goal off the head of midfielder Bryan Akongo, making the score 1-1 headed into the half.

In a roughly one-minute span, the Colonials would let loose a barrage of shots towards the Oakland goal with redshirt freshman keeper, Michael Sly Jr. denying all four shots, keeping the score at 1-1 just minutes into the latter half of play.

The Golden Grizzlies second goal of the night came via the senior to senior connection of Ville Ahola and Sproat. In the 63' Ahola sent a ball off a free kick into the RMU box from the left side of the field.

Ahola's pass would find contact with the head of Sproat, causing the ball to quickly change directions and ending up in the back of the Colonials net. Sproat's second-half goal marks the first multi-goal game for OU for the 2022 regular-season.

The goal was the first of the season for Sproat in what was just his second overall shot on the 2022 regular-season, Sproat's score gave him the team lead in shot percentage this season with 0.5%.

Upperclassmen led the way but not without aid from their underclassmen. In his second consecutive start of the season, Malik Sylvester tallied season highs in minutes, shots, and shots on goal while effectively using his 6-foot-2, 175 pound frame defensively, winning a multitude of 50-50 balls for the Golden Grizzlies.

The victory brings Oakland's conference record to an even 1-1, with seven conference games remaining on the schedule for the black and gold.
