Hainer Grabs Early Goal for Metro Series Win

ROCHESTER, Mich. – Oakland Men's Soccer team claimed their second victory in a row Saturday evening behind the abundance of loud and lively Golden Grizzlies fans who made the trip out to the Oakland Soccer Field where the Golden Grizzlies would take down Detroit Mercy in an intense 1-0 match.

The only goal in the game would be scored just 90 seconds after the opening kick as freshman Doug Hainer blasted a shot from roughly 35-yards away that sailed over the Titans' keeper and into the top left corner of the UDM net.

On just his second shot of the 2022 regular-season, the local Oakland Township, Michigan product would notch his first goal as a Golden Grizzly.

Oakland's next offensive threat came in the 23'. Receiving the ball off of a corner kick, Kai Garvey quickly fired a shot towards the Titans' goal from point blank distance that was deflected out of bounds by UDM keeper, Jonathan Kliewer.

As the second half began, the intensity and physicality levels rose greatly. In the second half alone, 14 fouls were called, including three yellow cards and one red.

OU's best chance to extend their 1-0 leading came in the 67' when redshirt freshman Zach Townsend sent a close-range shot at the Titans' goal that would hit the bottom portion of the crossbar and was eventually controlled by UDM.

Taiga Shiokawa made his first start of the season Saturday evening and played a pivotal role in the offensive attack for the black and gold as the Nagano City, Japan native got off three shots on the night.

Defensively, it was a flawless night for Michael Sly Jr. as he safely collected all six of the Titans' shots on goal.

The 1-0 victory marks the second time this season the Golden Grizzlies have held their opponent scoreless, Oakland tied Michigan in Ann Arbor with a 0-0 final score back on September 19.

Saturday nights win improved OU's conference record to 2-0-1, ranking them third in the conference behind Wright State and Cleveland State.
