Game Recap: Men's Soccer | | Mitch McCartney

Oakland Falls in #HLMSOC Power Match

CLEVELAND, Ohio. – Oakland Men's Soccer fell to the Cleveland State Vikings Saturday night in a physical 1-0 match between two #HLMSOC powers.

The Golden Grizzlies opened the match in a similar fashion as their previous one, (vs UDM 10/1) with a fantastic offensive opportunity. Just three minutes after the opening kick, Dawsun Schrum passed the ball into the middle of the CSU box to an eager Kevin Hubbell. Hubbell's shot would miss the net wide right.

As the first half progressed, Oakland made a multitude of well-executed defensive plays. First, in the 24' senior Reid Sproat slid into the OU box to knock away the Vikings' attempt to cross the ball. Four minutes later, freshman Malik Sylvester would force a CSU turnover as the lone Oakland defender between the ball and OU keeper, Michael Sly Jr.

The Golden Grizzlies ended the first half and began the second with more superb defense.

Seven minutes into the latter half of play, in the midst of a Cleveland State offensive opportunity, Reid Sproat once again displayed his elite reflexes by blocking a Vikings' shot directly in front of the OU net. The shot would be rebounded and quickly put on goal again by CSU, this time being saved Sly Jr.

Cleveland State scored what would prove to be the difference making goal in the 56' as Danilo Bakoc received the ball off a corner kick and slightly tapped the ball behind the legs of Sly Jr, giving CSU the 1-0 edge.

Oakland's best chance to tie the game came in the 68' when the Golden grizzlies were awarded a penalty kick. Ville Ahola placed a high-speed grounder towards the bottom right corner of the net that was saved in diving fashion by the Vikings' goaltender.

Schrum would spearhead the last notable offensive opportunity for Oakland. In the 73' Schrum dribbled the ball into Viking territory and passed the ball to Kai Garvey, who was positioned inside the CSU box. Upon receiving the ball, Garvey quickly shot it towards the Vikings' net forcing the Cleveland State keeper to make a save on the ball.

The game would conclude in a 1-0 victory for Cleveland State, bringing the 2022 conference-record to 2-1-1.
