Battle-Hardened Spirit Lifts Oakland to Road Victory over Youngstown State

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio. – On Tuesday, Oakland University Volleyball returned from a routing first set to steal three-straight frames from the Penguins of Youngstown State in Ohio to move to 2-2 in #HLVB play.

The Penguins slid out to a 25-10 first set win, forcing Oakland to play from behind as the Golden Grizzlies, featuring Patti Cesarini and Jessica Riedl, continuing to put kills on the scoreboard early on in set two as the team rattled off six straight to put things at 17-11 en route to the set two win 25-16.

In the third frame, the Golden Grizzlies would once again go to work after reaching the 20-point mark first with the Penguins not far behind following a five-point run that would put the home red up 21-20. Two-straight errors from YSU gifted OU back the lead but it was Anna Nie's back-to-back kills that snatched the win away 25-23 in favor of Oakland.

In the final set, Madison Ross would put in emphatic kills that forced YSU to respond early though never quite getting back to the margins Oakland was establishing as the Penguins committed 20 attacking errors on the night. Cesarini would get the final four kills on the night to complete the three-set sweep after falling down 1-0 early on.

"I was proud of our fight tonight. After a slow start in set one, we talked about making a decision to fight and that's what we did," said Head Coach Krista Rice, "Our service pressure and a strong middle presence showed up big for us in sets two through four. Kyle (Stahl) also made a critical defensive change versus Gursching that put us in a position to slow her down. This is a great road win for our team."
