Oakland Brings It Back Home for Purdue Fort Wayne Matchup

ROCHESTER, Mich - The Oakland Women's Soccer team will be back at home this Sunday as they take on Purdue Fort Wayne at 1:00 pm.

The Golden Grizzlies previously played Green Bay adding another tie to their four game tie streak, as their season record moves to 3-1-6. Over the course of the game Oakland was eager to get the ball in the net with 16 shot attempts from passing the ball around to a variety of different Golden Grizzly players. Although they continued with this momentum, they were not able to get the ball in the net. However, they also didn't allow any goals from the Phoenix leaving the game to 0-0. 

Offensive leaders for Oakland are Alexa Sabbagh with three goals along with seven other Golden Grizzly players with one goal each. Additionally, Sami Lopez leads with two assists for the season with Alexa Sabbagh, Jayna Fraser, and Macey Wierenga following her with one assist each. Alexa Sabbagh is second in the Horizon League standings for shots on goal and third in the league for shots. 

Goalkeeper Noëmi Stadelmann is at 25 saves for the season and a save percentage of 89.3%. Along with her, goalkeeper Haley Lindow is at eight saves with a save percentage of 80%. Stadelmann is currently at the top of the goalkeeper leaderboard for Horizon League in goals against average, saves, and shutouts per game. 

The United Soccer Coaches revealed its weekly North Region Poll on September 20th with Oakland standing the No. 9 team in the region.

SCOUTING REPORT

The Mastodons are 4-2-3 for the season so far. Most recently recording a tie against IUPUI for their first Horizon League conference game of the season. Mackenzie Evans leads the team in goals with four goals and following her is Riley Vruggink, Kelsey Gallagher, and Zoe Greenhalge with two goals each. 

Goalkeeper Samantha Castaneda defends the Mastodons this season with 46 saves so far totalling a save percentage of 83.6%.

 


NATIONAL RECOGNITION
The United Soccer Coaches revealed its week one North Region Poll on August 23 with Oakland the No. 6 team in the region just behind Michigan and above Indiana, respectively.

FAVERO CONTRACT EXTENDED
Head Coach Juan Pablo Favero's contract has been extended through the 2026 season, Oakland University announced in August.

PRESEASON NO. 1
Oakland was selected as the preseason favorite in the 2022 #HLWSOC Preseason Poll with 115 votes and five first-place votes. 

NEWCOMERS TO WATCH
Seven newcomers enter the 2022 Golden Grizzlies roster on both sides of the field including transfer Allie Tefend and freshman Anuhea Aluli from Hawaii. 

LOPEZ PLAYER TO WATCH
Midfielder Sami Lopez is one of 38 women named to an exclusive list that is the NCAA Division I Players to Watch release which included four returning All-Americans from a year ago. Lopez is the only Horizon League student-athlete mentioned. 

FOUR ON 2021 #HLWSOC ALL-LEAGUE TEAM
Lopez and Zak find themselves on the All-League First Team roster with Dhlamini on the Second Team List in 2021. Rounding out the honors was Sharon Sampson on the All-Freshman Team squad. 

NATIONAL TEAM - GOLDEN GRIZZLIES
Dhlamini and Sharon Sampson are two Golden Grizzlies playing on the national stage as Dhlamini's South African National Team won the 2022 WAFCON final to qualify for the Women's World Cup in 2023. Sampson made a roster spot on the U-20 "Black Princess of Ghana" National team, playing in the 2022 FIFA U-20 World Cup in Costa Rica.
