Golden Grizzlies Split Final Day of Green and White Classic

EAST LANSING, Mich. – On Saturday, Oakland University Volleyball split the final day of the Green and White Classic with a win against Evansville and a loss to Chicago State in the Breslin Center.

OAKLAND 3, EVANSVILLE 2

Patti Cesarini's kills near the end of the first set would not be enough to pry away the first frame from the Purple Aces as the Golden Grizzlies would have to work from behind in the second. Oakland would counter out of the gate with a 9-2 scoring run, sparked by Kennedy Dolmage's service ace en route to a breezy 25-15 set two win.

A 9-1 streak would get Oakland to two set victories as Libby Gentile and Cesarini would go on a frenzy, bookended by a Jessica Riedl kill from Rachel Rossman, who tallied 32 assists in the day's start. Evansville would have to scrape and claw their way away from the Golden Grizzlies in the fourth following OU's come-from-behind effort that would force the Purple Aces into survival mode as it forced a fifth set.

The fifth set would once again be a tightly-contested one as the Golden Grizzlies sat on game point at 14-11 before the Purple Aces would leap ahead 15-14, on the edge of the game winner. Libby Gentile and Clarke Adams would aid Oakland back on top at 16-15 before a disappointing attacking error by Evansville would secure OU's fourth win of the season.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS
  • The Golden Grizzlies held the edge in blocks, 10-4
  • Cesarini would be the game's kill leader with 24 above all competitors
  • Rossman racked up 32 assists in the first game, the highest so far this season
  • Anna Nie was a part of six blocks

OAKLAND 0, CHICAGO STATE 3

After a strongly contested start to the first frame, the Cougars would initiate a blitz on the Golden Grizzlies' defense to steal away the first set before Oakland would force a second set push with the outing going into extra points.

In that set, Oakland would have the lead at multiple points behind Lepo's kill before the Cougars would come climbing back for the 2-0 set edge. Both teams would bounce back-and-forth in the crucial third set as Chicago State would once again go on scoring drives for the sweep.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS
  • Cesarini and Adams reach double-digit kills with 12 and 11, respectively
  • Rossman and AnnaBelle Tomei once again lead the team in assists with 20 and 19

Following the conclusion of the invite, Rossman was named to the All-Tournament Team.

The Horizon League slate opens on Tuesday, September 20 at 6:00 p.m. as the Golden Grizzlies travel to Moon Township, Pennsylvania for a showdown with Robert Morris.
