Rochester, Mich. – Playing their first home game since April 16, the Golden Grizzlies dropped the first of a three-game set, 8-6, to the Milwaukee Panthers on Friday, April 29.
The win moves Milwaukee to 16-21 (5-10 Horizon League), while Oakland is now 19-21 (9-8).
Despite Friday's loss, the Golden Grizzlies are still in third place in the league standings, one game ahead of Youngstown State in the loss column.
Oakland jumped out to a 3-0 lead on Friday, scoring twice in the first inning on a single by graduate student second baseman
Brad Goulet and adding another when center fielder
Seth Tucker, a fellow graduate student, scored in the second.
Milwaukee would begin to chip away at this deficit in the third, scoring their first run of the afternoon when junior left fielder Luke Seidel – who collected a team-high three hits on the day – plated senior right fielder Zach Nogalski with a single to left center.
Redshirt junior catcher Jack Thelen tied the tilt with a two-run blast in the fourth, and the Panthers moved ahead for the first time, 4-3, on a single by junior second baseman Mark Connelly in the fifth.
The Golden Grizzlies tied the contest at four in their half of the fifth, but Milwaukee scored twice in both the sixth and seventh frames to build up an 8-4 cushion.
Oakland would cut into this four-run Panther lead with a run in the seventh and another in the ninth, but it was not enough, falling 8-6.
Coming in to record the last out of the fifth and remaining out there until there was one out in the seventh, 6-foot-6 redshirt junior Ryan Hoerter picked up the win, his second of the campaign. Sophomore right-hander AJ Blubaugh handled the final two outs for his third save of the season.
